A search for acceptance: An undocumented student lives in limbo

SANTA CRUZ

Xochitlquetzal hates the words "illegal" and "alien," especially when they're side by side.

"It's dehumanizing this idea that a person can be illegal,' and by calling someone an alien you label them as an other,' as not human," the UC Santa Cruz student said.

The community studies major has a remarkable memory and tells vivid stories from childhood, many of which come back to an endless struggle for acceptance.

Xochitlquetzal carries a serious demeanor, with broad shoulders that seem to support an unseen weight.

None of this is surprising when Xochitlquetzal stares with large, dark, emotive eyes and begins to tell the story of growing up in California an undocumented immigrant and transgender.

Is this a parody? No only is the content drivel, but the writing is impressively bad, even by current standards.

So, he’s whining about getting a free university education, while the rest of us have to pay through the nose for it?

And, no doubt, free food and free computers, and free medical care, etc., etc.

And that’s what they are poor lost souls.

Pitifully mentally ill and an illegal to boot.

Not a very comfortable position.

But in spite of those facts, are we to just ignore the facts that people are sneaking into this country every day and we do nothing?

It has to be stopped, and those who are here illegally need to be returned from whence they came.

OK ... how about just "trespasser" or "invader"?

"New Conquistador"?

"Xochitlquetzal is a goddess associated with concepts of fertility, beauty, and female sexual power"

My first thought after seeing the photo! Pure Aztec hotness!

Let’s see..he’s not supposed to be here, therefore, illegal. And he’s not a citizen, therefore, that would make him an alien. How is any of this inaccurate?

Stopping at 'illegal/alien' is being gracious. Quit while you're ahead.

Assemblyman Monning advocates abortion rights in Santa Cruz
By JENNA BROGAN
01/23/2011

SANTA CRUZ — Abortion rights activists may have a challenging year ahead with a Republican-dominant House of Representatives, but the near 100 attendees at Saturday’s annual Pro-Choice Brunch, hosted by the Reproductive Rights Network of Santa Cruz County, vowed not to back down.

Packed into the United Methodist Church hall to hear Assemblyman Bill Monning, D-Carmel, speak, were past and present Santa Cruz City Council members, county supervisors, schools representatives and numerous community members.

The event, which commemorated the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, has been educating the community about reproductive rights for two decades.

“The right to choose is still very much threatened and has to be defended,” said Carol Fuller, chairwoman of the local Reproductive Rights Network. “The government is launching new attacks on women’s rights to abortion.”

Abortion rights came under fire Thursday, when the House voted to prevent insurance companies from paying for abortion services with the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. The recession has also placed states that pay for abortions with state money in a pinch.

“We don’t believe the Republican moves in the House will pass in the Senate, but they’re not just symbolic,” said Monning. “They serve to fuel those in the 29 anti-choice states.”

As chairman of the Health Committee in the California Assembly, Monning is an advocate of a woman’s right to annual check-ups, breast exams,

contraception and abortion, and says there is a direct connection between the right to reproductive choice and the right to health care.

“It’s important that we’re constantly supporting the next generation of activists,” Monning said.

In an effort to recognize the work being done by local young people, the Reproductive Rights Network honored Jessica Arnold, a fourth-year Community Studies student at UC Santa Cruz, who founded an on-campus club called Voices for Reproductive Justice.

“We’re trying to create the next movement of young leaders,” said Arnold, who was a development and public affairs intern at Planned Parenthood for eight months. “We have access to safe and legal abortion, but with health care reform, women’s health and sex education are being cut in covert ways. We need to focus on where we’ve been and where we want to go.”

While Santa Cruz is well-known for its more liberal views, groups like 40 Days for Life often picket Planned Parenthood on Pacific Avenue. Members of the group could not be reached for comment.

I see some real possibilities here, both for illegal aliens and the US military.

To start with, the US military is a high tech, fine tuned and superb military force. When committed outside of the United States, they are, however, very expensive. Quality costs money. Unfortunately, many of the missions to which they are assigned are low quality, wasteful, guard duty missions, yet still extremely expensive.

So why spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to train and deploy personnel where a cheap, minimum wage security guard will do?

This is where illegal aliens come in. Dare I say, “Doing jobs that Americans don’t want to do.”

For 1500 years, European nations saved a ton of money by hiring mercenaries instead of having a standing army. Or at least using mercenaries instead of using their standing army. The US should do the same, as long as it is done using the lessons learned from those 1500 years.

The US could convert one of its uninhabited islands, say Johnston Atoll, into a barracks for individuals who want to be on an expedited path to US citizenship by working on behalf of the US as mercenaries.

Under the leadership of US officers and NCOs, they could be trained in the guard duty type assignments normally carried out by expensive light infantry. The US military would transport them, and provide logistical support for these extended and very low intensity missions.

And for every one of them who gets minimum wage, room and board, we can redeploy a real soldier to where they will actually do some good.

That’s a pretty good deal all around. For five years, say, of work without getting in to trouble, they get to be on the fast track to US citizenship. Maybe two more years of work for each additional spouse or child family member.

Not full citizenship, mind you, but just an expedited citizenship path.

It could easily save the US billions of dollars every year, and allowing us to use our highly trained professional military where they should be deployed. Better for them as well as our wallets.

Oh, the indignity of the English language, to lack a gender-neutral singular nominative pronoun other than "it"!

Based on that picture, I'd say that the pronoun it is entirely appropriate.

What is more dehumanizing, being called an illegal alien or doing what Mexico is doing to its citizens which forces them to have to run from such a broken country into the success that is the United States of America? When will all of these illegal immigrants turn on their country of origin as the source of the real problem? I will not be holding my breath.

Xochitlquetzal must be a made up name, because no Mexican, or Central American parent gives their kid that kind of name these days. Could be an issue of some activist taking on an Aztec name out of ‘solidarity’ with their heritage, kind of like black activists making up new names they think are of African heritage.
