President Obama's State of the Union speech Tuesday will be in part driven by events - chief among them the "shellacking" he took in the midterm elections and the assassination attempt on Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona.
But it will also, inevitably, be driven by politics - and, along with the tax cut compromise worked out in December, set the groundwork for Mr. Obama's argument to voters that he deserves to be reelected in 2012.
When Republicans took control of the House in November, it was an obvious setback for Democrats. But it also came with an opportunity. After two years of casting stones from the sidelines, Republicans had to take some ownership of the business of governing. The result was the unexpectedly productive lame duck session punctuated by the tax cut compromise, which provided Americans with a glimpse - however brief - of a Washington that seemed to work.
And much of the credit for that went to Mr. Obama, who had promised to change the tone in Washington but had until that moment, in even the eyes of many of his supporters, failed to deliver. Polls in the wake of the compromise suggest that his standing has increased since the midterms, particularly among independents, who may be giving the president a second look as someone who ultimately can function as, in the words of his predecessor, "a uniter, not a divider."

Bob Scheiffer said O’s Tucson speech was the finest speech he had ever heard.
Guess he’ll have to get out the thesaurus for the SOTU.
Speeches SPEECHES ?? the country is in shambles because of this incompetent Bastard and we hear about his Speeches??
And why Exactly are we sitting with that thieving communist filth for this earth shattering event?
It is not a SOTU speech...
it is going to be a prolonged campaign speech...
Oh ..I am so for sure not watching and what a rathole shame the repulicans played right into the shared seats games.
Wow.
If they had guts they will get up and walk out.
If there’s a running thread here tomorrow night on the SOTU, all I can say is God bless those brave souls who have the stomach to watch/listen to it. You’re better than I am.
Why, that's EXACTLY what he said last year.
Billions of 'thin air' dollars later, all those 99 week folks have to be wondering where the jobs are.
I can’t wait to see Baraq campaigning on a platform of 4 more years of 10% unemployment and $4 gas.
Can we give him another Nobel prize? He reads good.
The media have gone into all out slobber mode in an effort to boost Obama’s popularity. They seized the moment after the shooting in Arizona knowing the Republicans would be knocked off kilter and unable to respond. Conservatives were too busy defending themselves from scurrilous MSM attacks blaming them for the shooting, meanwhile Obama was able to position himself as above the fray and the healer-in-chief.
Add to that the Republican party (even many very conservative members who you’d think would be smarter) have chosen to go along with SOTU date night and sit next to a Democrat. By doing this they’ve essentially accepted the liberal MSM talking point that the “tenor of the debate” needs to be toned down. Sitting together also provides a better environment for Obama during his speech.
All in all, the last month or so has been politically sickening and should be a reminder to us all that 1)the MSM is still extremely powerful in influencing public opinion when it really goes into Obama cheer leading mode and 2) the American people have not in any way rejected the social welfare state and still, despite his utter failure as President, like Obama (not necessarily approve, but like him personally).
Five Pillars - is that a reference to something else? As in a Moon God Death Cult?
See my tagline.
Yeah, I see the parenthesis in the thread title. The Ministry of Truth has already issued the talking points memos.
The phrase is inspired by "the five pillars of Islam" (profession of faith, prayer five times a day, fasting during Ramadan, alms-giving, pilgrimage to Mecca).
