Gibbs: Obama still hasn't called Egyptian leader as protests rage

The administration tried to strike a cautious balance Friday between backing a longtime U.S. ally and supporting pro-democracy demonstrators as violent protests against the regime in Egypt spiraled out of control.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs called for restraint in Egypt as protesters there continue to square off with government forces.

Gibbs said President Obama still has not spoken with endangered Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who has ruled the country for nearly 30 years, but he said U.S. officials have been communicating to Egyptian officials American displeasure with the situation.

"We have throughout the process, our ambassador and others in the government have been in touch with the Egyptian government," Gibbs said. "President Obama has not spoken with President Mubarak."

Perhaps he’s planning to send Zelaya in to take over.

If I were the guy in charge in Egypt right now, the last thing I’d want to do is talk with Barry0.

Nope, they’re quietly working on putting Zelaya back in power in Honduras.

There is a bsic fight going on in the Middle East and Africa right now.

The fight is between extremist terrorist forces and more moderate freedom loving liberating forces wishing for liberty and democratic reforms that give more power and control to the people rather than dictatorships, totalitarian governments and tyrannical despots who steal whatever they can from their own citizens once they achieve the power and control they seek.

Unfortunately the UN along with the tacit approval of such countries as the US have supported these undemocratic regimes in the past.

It is time this tacit approval stop as well as giving foreign aid to these types of governments in order to prop them up.

This also means getting tough with regimes such as Iran and North Korea.

That will drive down tourism big time.

No longer any reason to go to or visit Egypt.

The usual crisis response from Obama takes about 9 - 10 days, as he has in the BP/Transocean oil spill disaster. Before he comments, he’ll send lawyers.
