Luis Malpica de Lamadrid is the new consul general of Mexico in Houston. He was the chairman of the Federal Court of Administrative and Fiscal Justice of Mexico from 2006 to 2007 after completing his doctoral studies in law at the Universidad Autónoma de México and the University of Paris in France. Malpica was a university professor for 40 years and also held prominent positions in Mexican financial institutions such as Banamex and Grupo México Serfín in the 90s. His first assignment abroad was as consul general of Mexico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2008. From there he came to Houston, where he now holds the same position. Malpica is married and has three children.

Q. Does your legal and financial profile have anything to do with your appointment as consul in Houston?

Partly yes … I have been a professor at the School of Law of UNAM (Universidad Autónoma de México), teaching public international law for over 40 years. … So while I have a grasp of diplomacy, both as to theory as well as in practice, I also am familiar with the position's commercial and banking aspects. We want to give more emphasis and importance to the trade between Mexico and Texas and between Mexico and Houston, which already is very important. Texas is the main trading partner of Mexico. Houston is a trade partner with Mexico and vice versa. So, the important thing is to increase this trade and diversify it. … We also want to increase the tourism trade and further promote the cultural aspect.

Q. Regarding tourism, how can you fight the current image of constant violence, particularly in northern Mexico?

Well Americans... I think most of you do not know what this man name means... Luis Malpica de Lamadrid - Malpica means "Mal = bad" and "pica = dick" meaning more like the bad ass dick from Madrid... How appropriate...
