State legislators in Indiana and Minnesota are pushing laws requiring public documents and other government business in those states to be done only in English.
Minnesota state Senators introduced their bill on Monday; the measure is similar to one introduced in the state House earlier this month.
Indiana state House representatives voted 63 to 26 last week to require all business to be conducted in English. Next the bill heads to the state Senate. Like Minnesota, Indianas measure allows exceptions to the English-only rule in cases of public health or safety situations.
Official English advocates say they feel the momentum is on their side this year, with many Republicans who support the measure having won in the November elections and in a position to move the issue forward.
No doubt about it, said Tim Schultz, director of government relations for U.S. English, the Washington D. C. group that leads national lobbying efforts for Official English laws.

LOL..........
must be written in 3rd Grade Hillbilly.
Liberals say a lot of ridiculous illogical things. We can’t afford translators for every language in the world. Those who can’t speak English can hire their own.
“English-Only and English as Official Language Bills Gain Momentum”

The libs will call this:
- racist
- unfair
- evil
- narrow minded
- homophobic
- trampling our rights
- etc, etc, etc.
Yeah? We don't actually know what they're saying, because they aren't saying it in English. So eff 'em.
A nations currency is a nations language. Ours is printed in English. Ever short some jabbering foreigner a few bucks in their check or change and suddenly they’re speaking the King’s English better than anyone of us.
‘’Racist’’. What does language have to do with race?
Odd that Fox News only posted this article on their Latino site...okay to tell this to opponents of it but don’t give any ideas to those in favor of such laws?
Good luck with that. I recently had weekly doctor appts. for a few months. Every week there were other patients who had one of the clinic's (paid) translators with them. I didn't see any at the hospital, though.
A friend of mine came from Germany to the States when he was about 14 and spoke hardly any English. He is scornful of immigrants who do not learn English.
Legal Status of official English in Arizona
In 1986, this state had passed a referendum declaring English its official language, but it was struck down by a state court ruling [] an official English ammendment to their state constitution. It was struck down by an Arizona judge as unconstitutional under federal law despite a U.S. Supreme Court ruling to the contrary.
ProEnglish founder Bob Park had defended the law to the U.S. Supreme Court. The number of Arizonans who speak little or no English has risen 147% since 1990.
Proposition 106 was drafted to address the concerns raised by the courts about the 1986 amendment. In 2006, it passed by a 74% majority.
More than a quarter (25.8 percent), or more than one million, of this states residents speak a language other than English in their home. More than 100,000 households are linguistically isolated. The most common of these languages are Spanish, Navajo, German, and Chinese.
In 2000, Arizona passed a law requiring the use of English immersion programs in public schools for students who did not speak English. Studies had found that Arizonas incumbent system of bilingual education was badly failing Arizonas students.

Not to mention, it is not doing any favors to legal immigrants if we do not give them an incentive to learn English.
I see you are fairly new here.
These are the accusatory words typically used for any occasion when a liberal is upset, but finds themselves stuck with only their vestigial brain to work with.
Well thanks , I don’t know what being new here has to do with anything but my question was really rhetorical. Believe me, I know how liberals think. I used to be one.
Ping!
Exactly, aside from the Balkanization of the country into little ethnic enclaves, it's damned expensive! Every phone bank, ATM and sign with the Spanish option costs extra money to program or hire the translators and for what purpose?
On a few jobs I worked with a lot of Poles and Hungarians. They had green cards, but I never saw any company make special accommodations for their language. One guy I became friends with told me when he got here from Romania he couldn't speak a lick of English. He went out and purchased one of the language software programs from rosetta stone and that's how he learned. Since nobody knew Romanian there wasn't anyone to translate for him on the job so within 8 months he was forced to gain a decent command of the language.
It really shouldn't be that expensive to do 'in house' so to speak. Thousands of times cheaper than mandating it for every government office across the board throughout the country.
