I feel like a thug myself for wanting Mubarak to stay in power until September so that a viable democratic, pro-western candidate can emerge and get organized well enough to have a chance to win.

Am I wrong?

If Mubarak leaves before September it will indicate that the military have capitulated (unless of course Suleiman takes over). And if the military capitulates, you will have chaos and the chance for a good outcome of all this protesting will be questionable indeed. I think many people have been surprised by how long it took the Mubarak civilians to react. Then again, I am aware how the Mukhabarat (military intelligence) works and just how vicious the Ministry of Interior people can be. I think now they have begun to show their hand.
