Both Begich and Murkowski decry earmark ban

Both of Alaska's senators said Tuesday they were disappointed the top Senate appropriator was calling for a moratorium on earmarking, the practice that has directed billions of dollars in federal spending to Alaska.

Democratic Sen. Mark Begich and Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski both said they agree there's a need to cut federal spending, but neither thinks an end to earmarks is the way to do it.

"I have said many times before, Alaska is a young state with many needs, and we deserve our fair share of federal funding to develop our resources and our infrastructure," Begich said.

Murkowksi, who sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee, said she believes it's up to Congress to determine spending. By leaving the executive branch to determine such appropriations, they're ceding power to the White House, she said.

"We are in essence abdicating our constitutional duties, giving cabinet departments and federal agencies the sole power, authority and ability to target and spend taxpayers’ money," she said.

The delegation landed $227 million in earmarks in 2009, compared to $87 million in 2010, according to the nonpartisan budget watchdogs at Taxpayers for Common Sense. Alaska went from No. 1 per capita to No. 6.

She is truely a dim bulb and third-rater all around. What a shame it is that a capable guy like Miller loses to this idiot.

Thank you Alaskans for writing in mispelled votes to get this pathetic piece reelected.

This Alaskan didn't vote for either one of those two POSs, thank you.

Please don't blame the average voters in Alaska. We voted her out in the primaries, and she conceded. Then her daddy got into the act and called his union buddies, his crooked cronies in the Native associations, and all the democrats. They are the ones who voted for that miserable ginch, not the average voters. The election was stolen by the Murkowski machine.

I was all inclusive in my remarks. Sorry, Of course, you are right. It happens in Louisiana all the time i.e. Mary Landrieu - we have been trying to get her out or years. Hopefully this next election will be the charm. I hope Alaskans will let Murkowski know she is living on borrowed time. Be prepared next time for the slug invasion that will surely happen. I would be embarrassed to know that I had to get my daddy to win an election for me and that I would not win on my own merits. But, it is all about power and ego both combined, equal a big fat loser.

Good for you. Better luck next time. We have the same problem getting rid of Mary Landrieu in Louisiana so, I understand your pain.

To be fair, Alaska has major issues that most states don’t have due to it’s location, size and limited population.
