Senator Grassley pushes BATFE on Project Gunwalker
Des Moines Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 1 February, 2011 | Sean McClanahan

Some of you may have heard about the brewing scandal called “Project Gunwalker.” In a nutshell, BATFE is being accused of walking guns – mostly AR-15s and AK-47s – across the border into Mexico from the Phoenix area. Making matters worse, it is reported that one of these weapons was used to kill Border Patrol Officer Brian Terry on December 15, 2010.

This is a scandal that has been brewing since September of last year. The problem is, though, none of the major mainstream media outlets seem to have the backbone to pick up the story and run with it. Whistle-blowers inside the BATFE have come forward, at risk of losing their jobs (or worse), and little has been done to give them any assistance.

If you need to get caught up on the entire story, my fellow Examiner, David Codrea, has been running hard with it for the past few weeks. The blog “Sipsey Street Irregulars” run by Mike Vanderboegh has a time line of the entire story as well.

One person who has started to get involved is our own Senator Charles Grassley. According to multiple sources, Senator Grassley is beginning to get more involved. It is reported that today, he reminded the BATFE that they may not impede the investigation and they must protect the whistle-blowers who have stepped forward with the insider information.

As of this evening, there are still very few media outlets that are following the story. The only two that we've seen have yet to attribute any of their information to the hard work done by Codrea and Vanderboegh.

Hats off the Senator Grassley for keeping up the pressure on BATFE and AG Holder. You'll notice that our other Senator, Tom Harkin, hasn't offered any assistance with the investigation of what could turn out to be quite the scandal.

I'm not going to try to upstage either Codrea or Vanderboegh with any new information. In fact, I have nothing new to add that they haven't already covered. They've worked extremely hard following this story, and they deserve a lot of credit for putting it out there. My goal here is to help spread the word and get more coverage for them.

Stay tuned to Codrea's Examiner page and Vanderboegh 's blog for more information as the story unfolds. We could also contact Senator Grassley and thank him for the work that he's done so far, and encourage him to stay with it and see this through to its conclusion. Officer Terry deserves nothing less.

Commendable, competition in a case like this is harmful.

In short, the allegation is that the ATF approved of guns being smuggled into Mexico to bump up the number of guns traced to the US and guns confiscated by the ATF in the smuggling process.

The Obama administration and the MSM trial ballooned the idea that 90% of the the guns used in Mexico violence were smuggled in from the US, and that the US was therefore responsible for the violence. While this number was quickly derided and disproved by the blogosphere, the administration went ahead with a considerable expenditure of millions of dollars to the ATF in order to “stop the flow of guns to Mexico”. For millions of dollars the ATF ended up confiscating a couple of dozen guns, as I recall.

There is ample motive for the ATF to push for some more guns to be smuggled to Mexico to prop up the failing idea of massive amounts of US guns going to Mexico. Only a few dozen would make a tremendous bump up in their statistics; project gunwalker is rumored to involve hundreds of rifles.

The ATF has never been held accountable for their many crimes over the last 40 years. The most common response is that their budget has been increased, as happened after the Waco fiasco. Their total experience is that they will always be given a pass, no matter how badly they mess up, because the MSM loves them. The MSM loves them because the MSM loves the idea of a government monopoly on arms.

As we say in Iowa; “Tom Harkin is as worthless as tits on a boar”.
