perhaps the dumbest thing I have ever heard a politician say I can think of plenty of other things, even excluding momentary brain lapses like "57 states". How about Biden claiming FDR reasured the country by going on TV in 1929 (3+ years before he bacame president and 20 years before the country had TV). Then there's Sen. Patty Murry (D-WA) who shortly after 9/11/2001 that Osama Bin Laden was popular in Afghanistan because he built hospitals and day care centers. Can't think of anything a pol has ever said that was dumber than that.
