That’s because as a Californian, you don’t have a CLUE about Alabama.
I know people voted these folks in, in the first place and ideology never changes.
AI, you are wrong on this one.
You see, less than a generation ago, democrats in Alabama were the CONSERVATIVE party. There were no Republicans to speak of. The first Republican to even get votes here was Nixon, but barely a majority. By the time Reagan beat Carter, it was a little better. To old Alabamians, Republicans were Damn Yankees.
This is not, and was not the case in the rest of the country, but was true in the South.
In bigger, more populous southern states like Florida, Georgia, and Texas, the change from democrat to Republicans happened during the 80’s and 90’s. It is still happening in Alabama. The last of the old school, conservative democrats in Alabama are dying, and the few older children of them who are still democrats are moving into the Republican party. All the rest have already made the change.
Now the democrats in Alabama are an African-American party, with only a few white liberals (we have a small minority). I’m hoping to see the conservatives blacks, who are actually the vast majority of blacks here in the Alabama countryside, become Republicans. They won’t because they’ll be branded race traitors, but they are not liberals. They only vote for liberals, sadly.
“So true, people here forget Reagan was a liberal democrat at one time. Does that make him a RINO? I think not.”
I sometimes wonder if the Northerners commenting here, with absolutely NO UNDERSTANDING of local Southern politics are instead trolls...I just cannot help wondering, as I normally don’t comment on people that I’ve never heard of, in places that I have no idea of.
