Ryan Calls for 20 Percent Off the Top for Domestic Agencies

WASHINGTON -- Republicans controlling the House promised Thursday to slash domestic agencies' spending by almost 20 percent in their drive to bring it back to levels in place before President Barack Obama took office.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan announced the move as the first salvo in a battle with Obama as they seek to keep a campaign promise to cut $100 billion from domestic programs.

The cuts would bring huge changes to agencies used to budget boosts during Obama's first two years in office. The White House has vowed to fight Republicans, saying their plans could lead to widespread furloughs of federal employees and force vulnerable people off of subsidized housing, reduce services in national parks and slash aid to schools and local police and fire departments.

"Washington's spending spree is over," Ryan, R-Wis., said. "The spending limits will restore sanity to a broken budget process and return spending for domestic government agencies to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels."

Republicans made a campaign promise to cut $100 billion from Obama's request for domestic agencies like the Department of Education, for the budget year that began in October. But since the year is under way, they're so far falling short, just $58 billion under the plan released Thursday. They promise to try to fully impose the dramatic cuts during what is sure to be a contentious budget debate this year.

No, it’s NOT a start.

It is NOTHING! Period. NOTHING.

100 billion is 1/14th of the debt. You want to talk serious? Talk about 20% OF THE DEBT. Or even of THE DEFICIT.

100 billion is petty cash. The GOP had better get SERIOUS or they will be booted out.

Not enough to cut phantom dollars or even real budget dollars. We need to fire 40% of all government employees. Cuts are meaningless.

I agree. I’ll vote for the Republicans and give them a couple of years to get their act together and tackle the deficit. If not, then I’ll vote for a 3rd party (think tea) even though it’ll mean the Democrats will win in a landslide. In that scenario, our nation-state will be heading quickly toward a collapse just like the former Soviet Union.

The deficit is $1.5tril and the GOP struggles to come up with $100mil.

They are a disgusting joke.

We’ll see if they have staying power or if it’s still politics as usual in the nation’s capital.

Across the board is the way to go...20% is a good number.

If they could live on it 2 years ago, they can live on it today.

I could live on my income from 2 years ago, but some things would have to be reordered in our budget.

I agree 100%. Cut them off. They've been given too much authority. Not one American voted for them, yet they've been given dictatorial power over all of us.

Dudes, $100B is just the remainder for this fiscal year which ends in October. The 20% Ryan’s talking about is next year and beyond.
