The Mindset of Supposed Entitlement

To what lengths will cash strapped Democrat controlled states, counties and municipalities go to fatten their coffers to pay for their inflated budgets? While law enforcement should be chasing “bad guys” – the crack dealer, the murderer, the thief – those types of law breakers only strain an already tight budget filled with this gimme program and that gimmie program. No, all you have to do is follow the money trail. One look at Rhode Island will illustrate just that.

Truck drivers are prime targets for any number of traffic violations apart from speeding. The fact that they are “just passing through”, trying to earn a living in an increasingly difficult economy, makes the trucker nothing more than a check waiting to be cashed. Recently, while driving an 18-wheeler through Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in a major snowstorm, a trucker, who requested anonymity, had a chance meeting on the interstate with a state trooper.

No surprise here. For years the NYC budget had a certain amount of revenue from fines built in. This is standard procedure for most municipalities. If you notice whenever a budget cut happens, the last things cut are tax collectors, traffic cops and welfare checks. The revenue arm and the vote buying arm of government.

You’re right it is an interesting piece.

And the only way to fight such shenanigans other than legal court room challenges is to Boycott the state or specific City/town that are pulling them. AND make sure that the citizenry know that’s why the truckers aren’t bringing good to their stores anymore.

And yes, somebody will be greedy enough to say “They are paying me great money to drive there”. Well at least until they find that they can’t drive or get decent insurance because they have to many tickets on their records.

Although on that matter, I can see those jurisdictions coming up with a just-pay-it ticket and nothing shows up on your driving record. At which point it’s just like the third word with Mordida, (The Little Bite), or Baksheesh.

So, is that where we are headed?

If I may comment on something tangential about the piece . . .

Further up in today's forum was an article about how fewer and fewer people are writing in correct (i.e., communicable) English, and this first sentence, therefore, made me sigh.

Mr. Taylor:

You wrote:

To what lengths will cash strapped Democrat controlled states, counties and municipalities go to fatten their coffers to pay for their inflated budgets?

That sentence wasn't so easy to read. Why? Because you did not use appropriate word forms or punctuation.

In this sentence, "cash strapped" is an adjective; therefore, it should be written "cash-strapped."

Likewise, "Democrat controlled" is an adjective; therefore, it should be written "Democrat-controlled."

Since you used two adjectives consecutively to describe "states, counties and municpalities," you needed to separate those two adjectives with a comma. Therefore, your sentence, written correctly, would be:

"To what lengths will cash-strapped, Democrat-controlled states, counties and municipalities go to fatten their coffers to pay for their inflated budgets?"

Not only is the above correct, it is much easier to read and more easily communicates the author's idea.

Thank you. That is all.

Two incidents in the past year have led me to believe we're already a third world country with an entitlement mentality.

The first incident was my daughter, a child care professional who has never been anything other than a careful driver, found herself between a slow truck on an I-77 downgrade and a tailgating unmarked Bland County, Virginia sheriff deputy.

When the unmarked patrol car dropped back a little, she passed the semi safely, exceeding the speed limit slightly when doing so . . . as most people would do. The patrol car immediately pounced and wrote her a $150 ticket. One of the local lawyers I had contacted told us that Bland County had at least one unmarked car on duty 24/7 raising revenue on I-77 and probably more. Out of state license plates were a prime target.

The second incident was my wife flying home from California. Rather than paying $35 to fly an extra bag (small), she mailed it. There was a time when the U.S. Mail was secure and stealing from it would land you serious time in the slam.

Three weeks later, the package shows up in a different box with about half the stuff missing. By some strange coincidence, everything missing was the new stuff which she just bought. The local post office looks at the box, hears our story and just shrugs it off. The package was shipped from California and probably went through a sorting terminal in the Los Angeles area full of (how can I put this delicately?) affirmative action hires. Happens all the time, they told us, next time insure it.
