Giffords' Husband Will Return to Space, Official Confirms
Fox News ^ | Feb. 4, 2011 | Staff

The astronaut husband of wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has made his choice. He's headed to space in April.

An official close to the space shuttle program confirmed Friday morning that astronaut Mark Kelly will be aboard Endeavour for its final flight. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the information has not yet been made public.

Kelly is holding a news conference at Johnson Space Center in Houston on Friday afternoon.

...Kelly, 46, spent the past month debating whether to step down as commander of Endeavour's two-week mission. As he agonized over the decision, NASA named a backup commander, Rick Sturckow, who joined the crew for training.

Liftoff is targeted for April 19.

Leave the guy alone. Let him have and enjoy his career!!! Actually, he is really not too bright on “common sense” stuff!!! Any husband that would allow POTUS Obama to stage a “cheerleader rally” on his re-election behalf, when a dignified period of mourning was called for ain’t wrapped too tight!!! Just another braindead liberal floating along in LaLa land. Wish him well and his wife, too!!!

Have also heard that he has political aspirations post military.

If true, he needs the NASA mission as a resume enhancer.

Giffords had already been elected to a few terms in the state legislature and to at least one term in Congress when they got married, so I figure that she decided to keep her maiden name with which she had run all of those campaigns and run all those ads. To each his own.

I marvel at the ignorance and stupidity on display here.
I guess everyone posting on thread is better qualified than Mark Kelly to be commander of a space shuttle mission.
Or maybe they’re only qualified to sneer and take petty personal pot shots at two people who are their fellow Americans.

Well said, La Enchiladita. Well said.

Best wishes to both of them.

Is “braindead wife” an oxymoron?

I’m going to be the odd one out but personally I saw this coming right after the shooting. Yes, he left his job to go to his wife but what about their children? What happens to them if something happens to their father? Their Mother right now is recovering and who knows to what ability she will recover? IMHO, they strayed from their original spouses (him) and children to be together. Selfish is not with one event but a lifetime of events. IMHO. I feel sorry for the children.

He must be a selfish low life. If that shuttle blows up,, that brain damaged woman would be left alone. It isn’t about whether or not she is in medical extremis for the week or two he would be gone. It’s about what happens to his wife if he does a Challenger or Columbia.

No respect for this guy on my part. And as far as him being so critical to his crew,, Apollo 13 did pretty good with a crew substitution.

He’s a tool.

Looking at 1st 30 or so responses, in general this is a ‘rough crowd’.

I thought he would be declared ‘unable to perform’ once he supposedly ‘dissed’ the WH and wouldn’t sit at BO’s SOU Pep Rally.

His ‘reason/excuse’ was he didn’t want to leave her side - which is commendable - but I kind of figured he shot the remainder of his career down with that decision, at least in the minds of the petty bunch running things.

OH, THE SUSPENSE!

NOT!

Like an astronaut would give up his chance at a "mission" for anything. Like he wouldn't walk over graves to ride and "make history" with his pathetic time in pathetic LEO. This was the silliest PR stunt, and highly offensive to all the public who have been praying for G. Giffords.

This guy promoted this "will he, won't he?" BS just to get more attention from the crowds about his ride. This is the truth, and anyone who's been a part of NASA culture KNOWS it.

My opinion of ersatz "space explorers" just hit an all time LOW.

People pay $40M to ride to the space station. Like there's any pilot that'd give it up for anything.

Then add my above one to the rest.

Frankly, I've got an inside look at this. It was a PR gimmick to hype his own ride. Astronauts are Hollywood at its worse.

It was a mistake from the beginning to hype the passengers of our techno marvels. They are human beings more disappointing than you can imagine in their flaws, failures and incompetence, with the exception of Lovell.

Narcissism on steroids. Look at the failed marriages, if you don't believe me. Hollywood has better track record. Look at John Glenn, selling out our technology to the Chinese!

The Chinese wouldn't have that supercomputer without the efforts of several scumsuckers like Glenn.

You know, in all the discussions I’ve seen of this issue, no one really seems to be asking about the possible thoughts of other crew members. I’m sure they are not permitted to make known their opinion, but if I were the family of another crew member, I’d be concerned about a commander (or any member of the crew) with such an obvious distraction from the mission. Shouldn’t that weigh into the decision? I suspect NASA would not want the huge public relations black eye that would come from actually removing him— do you think they were hoping he would step down?

Astronauts are Hollywood at its worse.

Huh? Are you a member of the "Flat Earth Society" who believe the moon landing was staged in a TV studio and shuttle missions are phony too? Maybe you think our military is "Hollywood" too. Wow.
