One of the commentators on YouTube said he was landing not taking off and the arrester cable broke. It wasn’t his bad, apparently.

Exactly, and that's why you go to full burner, so you can “go around,” not go swimming.

The flight deck of that carrier doesn’t look long enough for a recovery even if he had been at full power. The wire broke when he was only about twenty feet from the end of it.

That’s why you fly it into the deck and maintain power until you stop.

He did. The arresting cable broke.

Tell the crewmembers of the George Washington how enjoyable you think it looks.

That’s in case you miss the wire. It you catch it and have been slowed down before it breaks, you aren’t taking off again.

I’m no expert but it just doesn’t look like that’s an option on that ridiculously short flight deck.

Why are you video spamming an old video that has been posted here many times before?

=8-)

It's really hard to laugh when the same thing has happened to ours too...

And apparently for the same reason, the pilot wasn’t at full throttle when he missed the cable. You can see his attempt to power up just before going into the drink.

What got missed here was by you when you missed the point. The pilot did NOT miss the cable.

O.K. I see that now. Did he stay at full throttle?

Maybe that’s why it broke?

It wouldn't have made any difference at all. His airspeed was so thoroughly bled off by the time the cable broke, he had no chance to get airborne again within the remaining deck distance.

I expect the pilot will have plenty of time to review his mistakes.

What mistakes? This was by the book. I guess you might say he made a mistake by getting out of bed that morning.
