Reporting from Escondido — It was just an inconvenient traffic stop on the way through town for Javier Barrera Saldivar. Police had spotted the broken tail light on his car, and he figured he'd get a fix-it ticket and be on his way. But federal immigration officers soon rolled up, wielding handcuffs and Barrera's mug shot on a cellphone.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have been stationed at the Police Department of this San Diego County city since May, responding to everything from traffic stops to gang sweeps in an aggressive effort to clear the community of illegal immigrants with deportation orders or criminal records.
Barrera, 24, the records showed, was a previously deported illegal immigrant with convictions for drunk driving and possessing a false driver's license. Instead of receiving a traffic citation and being released — which is what typically would have occurred — he was arrested and placed in deportation proceedings.

Contrary to the story, and the ACLU’s rhetoric, nobody’s stopping people on the street and inquiring into their immigration status. If they're stopped, and a check reveals they have a warrant, they get grabbed.
The interesting coincidence here is that the City Council on Wednesday held a long discussion on countering the bogus claims of racism that the left is peddling. It'd be enlightening to know whether Flores or our Hispanic Activist Councilmember pitched this story to the LAT, and, if so, when. It wouldn't be the first time they've worked together.
I don’t think he could have been amnestied in 86 if he had a criminal conviction in 79, could he ? Regardless, he should have been deported in 79 following his conviction and serving out his sentence. When illegals are released from prison, I would hope they aren’t released into the population like an American. They should be deported, right ?
Just confiscating the vehicles of uninsured drivers would put a huge financial burden on illegal aliens. There is a visual recognition system for police to automatically scan the license plate of vehicles and check the DMV status, parking tickets, warrants, etc. Every cop in CA should be running that system and check the DMV for insurance status as well, then immediately impound the vehicle.
I don’t understand my fellow Californians at all. We should be making CA unattractive for illegals and other freeloaders, and more attractive to the wealthy and businesses. Instead, we give a free ride to the former and tax to death the latter.
As forgiving as we are, it would probably depend on the infraction. You may be on to something there. Good point.
As for illegal alien convicts being deported upon being released, it’s my understanding that it IS NOT taking place.
I know for certain the L. A. jail system is not deporting upon release. I believe it’s the same for prisons too.
Is this crazy? Well, IMO it certainly is.
