I have a feeling (more of a hope) that the beyond stupid folks, while still professing a love for Obama, will not crawl over broken glass to vote for him this time.
They may be in the ‘been there, done that, he’s black, I like him, but nuthin’s better’ mode.

I think you are 100% on the mark here. Independents know what he’s all about now. They broke for Obama in 2008. I don’t think that’ll be happening this time.
If we can somehow get an appealing, conservative candidate in 2012, we’re going to score a major electoral victory. We’ll be able to secure a respectable majority in the Senate, maintain a substantial majority in the House, and have a conservative Executive branch :-)!
It will all come down to turnout. Obama can spend his $1B. It’s going to be a significantly tougher sell this time around. If our Presidential candidate fires up the base in this country, look out. Liberals do not find Obama to be liberal enough and independents are breaking away from him.
Of course, I wish I was writing this in May 2012 instead of now. Two years is an eternity in politics :-). Regardless, I agree 100% with your statement.
