Iran Overhauls Strategic Mig-29 Fighter Jets

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian Air Force commander announced on Monday that the country has succeeded in overhauling its strategic Mig-29 fighter jets inside the country.

"For the first time in the country, we received the permission for overhauling two Mig-29 fighter jets in Tabriz (air base) and the five-stage overhauling procedures were carried out in two phases in Tabriz," Commander of Tabriz Air Base Mohammad Hellatabadi said in a ceremony in Iran's Northwestern city of Tabriz.

"And today, we observe the two overhauled planes flying over Tabriz air base," the commander noted.

Earlier in July, 2010, Iranian Air Force Commander Brigadier General Hassan Shahsafi announced that the country has successfully renovated one of its strategic Mig-29 fighter jets.

Shahsafi added that the refurbishment of the fighter jet was carried out at a military airbase in the Northwestern city of Tabriz where the aircraft successfully took off after being grounded for years.

"All the stages of the fighter's repair and modernization program were conducted by Iranian engineers," Shahsafi noted at the time.

The commander also noted that the country has, over the past years, made extensive efforts to build the essential spare parts to upgrade the IRIAF fleet and optimize its performance.

Iran also witnessed the maiden flight of its pilotless trainer aircraft in June at the re-launching ceremony of the renovated Mig-29.

Iran has recently made good progress in the air industry and has succeeded in gaining the technical know-how for producing stealth aircraft and drones.

Are those the MiGs they “acquired” from Iraq in 1991?

I think it involves both Iraqi aircraft and new purchases from Russia.

...all purchased or stolen goods from the west.

more recent advances would probably be gifts direct from the Kendonesian in the White House

Where were they when we had the industrial revolution and what were the consequences of that?

Iran was a major F-4 purchaser. I wonder ho many of them are still flying. The Iranian Air Force probably has a lot more old pilots than it has operational aircraft. But they could give a real air force a day or so of trouble before breaking down. An air fleet with 3 or 4 of so many different old types has to be a maintenance nightmare.

Not if the aircraft are unflyable... Then maintenance is easy!

I trained with middle east pilots. The one thing that can be counted on is that they are as dumb as a box o' rocks when it comes to flying. The reason for this is that the persons they choose to train are not the ones who are the best, they are sons of military and government leaders along with very powerful business owners.

The next thing that is good / and bad, is that they have no defense logistics network. The duration of any sustained campaign by them in battle is about one week. Spare parts, meals, ground equipment, communications networks, replenishment units(trained and equipped), just collapses in the corrupt turn of the 1500's system they have.

The bad part to this explains their conquest for nuclear arms. They know that any large scale conventional war cannot be fought by them. It's mules hauling boxes on dirt roads and starving soldiers, or the great equalizer, nuclear weapons.

The Shah was a GREAT customer for American military hardware. When Jimmy Carter cut him loose, he screwed up the entire Middle East, cost us a lot of money, and a loyal ally. Not only that, he empowered all of this Islamist Terror bullshiite that has cost us blood and treasure ever since.

Henry Kissinger said something like, "It's tough for a country to be an enemy of the United States, but it is absolutely disastrous for a country to be our friend!" The Mombasa Moonbeam seems to be determined to prove this true with Mubarak in Egypt.
