Yeh...I would say in my lifetime Reagan was the best.

But over all....in History...I would say George Washington, Calvin Coolidge and then Ronald Reagan.

I give GW the first vote because he set the standard that defined the Constitution. Everyone knows we had a “President” before that but not with the constraints set upon laws which the colonies agreed.

What do you think?

Was Ronald Reagan the best president in U.S. history?

*

Yes. Reagan understood and articulated government’s role in our society and America’s place in the world. And he made his vision a reality. (624 responses)

37%
*

No. Reagan had his strengths but in the end he was a fiscal conservative in word, not actions. Don’t forget that he, too, raised taxes and expanded government. (183 responses)

11%
*

Yes. Reagan was optimistic, humorous, determined and principled. We never before and might never again see the perfect combination of presidential qualities. (264 responses)

16%
*

No. Reagan’s economic policies were ruinous, and by the time he left office he was doddering. This near religious worship of Reagan is undeserved. (608 responses)

I didn’t vote for just that reason. Reagan was the best modern president, but Washington wins the all-time honor, IMO.

Yeah, Reagan’s economic plans were ruinous alright. They only gave us about twenty years of economic growth and prosperity.

I’d like to see a poll asking which president brought more freedom to the world by freeing those under dictatorship or tyranny.

That is why we think RR was so great. We think freedom is a good thing.

Liberals don't.

To 48: Ditto - I really don’t like polls like this one; of course GW was the greatest president for so many reasons. At the same time, RR was one of the greatest. This poll is like a sucker punch because the answers don’t include that option or anything similar to it.

“We think freedom is a good thing.”

Yes, that’s it.

That’s what makes Free Republic so special
and all the people on board.
