DeMint Surveys the Field, Praises Jeb

February 7, 2011 8:15 P.M. By Robert Costa

Sen. Jim DeMint, the conservative star from South Carolina, is keeping a close eye on the emerging 2012 presidential field. New names, he observes, keep popping up. One of those, of course, is former Florida governor Jeb Bush. Rich, Kathryn, and John have all written about Bush’s appeal in recent days.

DeMint, in an interview with National Review Online, calls Bush “one of the best” possible presidential contenders. “Maybe the person we are looking for has not stepped out yet; it could be a Rick Perry or a Jeb Bush.”

“[Bush] would be a really good president and a good candidate,” DeMint says. “He had a solid record as governor; he showed that he was willing to push innovative things in education and elsewhere.”

DeMint says President Obama is “clearly beatable.” But the GOP nominee, he argues, will need to be formidable, since the president may be able to bounce off of a rebounding economy. Numerous potential candidates, he says, “are watching to see where Obama’s popularity will be. A lot is going to depend on whether people believe that he has anything to do with the economy coming back. And it will come back; you can’t keep the American economy down.”

NRO wonders: In coming months, if Bush and other conservative favorites decide to sit out 2012, will DeMint feel compelled to jump in? “I really am trying to avoid that,” he tells us. “I’m looking for good candidates out there in the field.”

“I would have to feel a strong pull from people all over the country,” DeMint says. “Again, it’s not something that, right now, appears to be in my future.”

But could a grassroots ‘Draft DeMint’ movement stir him to run? “I don’t want to suggest that I’m waiting for any kind of draft,” he says. “It’s really not what I want to do. I really don’t have any intention of running. . . . I’m not ruling anything out, but it’s not something I want to do.”

DeMint or Barbour will win the nomination process.

They will then pair whomever wins with either Ryan or Christie as VP.

Ya heard it here first. It’s the only thing that makes sense considering the electoral college.

WTO. The financial system and one world government. Abolishing current countries and creating 10 zones. The Euro Zone was the first and now they have the Euro. The mess in Egypt is the start of creating Zone 6. It includes Algeria Tunesia Libiya Egypt Sudan Saudi Arabia Yemen and a couple more. Eventually we are sceduled to become Amero zone with Canada and Mexico. Notice no input from Russia and China about Egypt. Something is up and very fishy.

Maybe Jim DeMint is being honest. Anyone ever think of that possibility?

Jeb! was a good governor in Florida. He served 8 years and did a fine job. Was he perfect? No.

“pissant

Curious. Why did you praise DeMint for not going to CPAC and yet squeal when Bachmann announced she will?”

Because he's the biggest hypocrite on FR.

You’re forgetting that they have to win Texas, to have any chance at all.

Praises of Jeb Bush as a good candidate -— illegal immigration positions? —— is out of whack with conservative values, so that’s out and out political pandering.

Jeb Bush is a non-starter on all fronts, even Karl Rove’s for 2012....LOL.

I might also mention that any surveying of the field is a bit premature, since the field remains vacant at this point, with the exception of the potted plant Willard Romney.

LOL.

I’ve said there are two people I will NOT vote for. Romney and Huckabee. Now I’ll add anyone named Bush. The list continues to grow.

See my tag line.

We don’t need another president pushing amnesty and insulting the base until he gets his way, or year-after-year when he doesn’t get his way. And if the party can’t get beyond the influence of those who believe pandering to Hispanics is the only way to win in the future, then the party’s future isn’t so bright.

I love Palin too, and what she brings to the process...and I don’t particularly care that she’s ‘radioactive’ (that might be a good thing) but I have to wonder exactly what she brings to the table in terms of electability.

She’s from a VERY small state, that really isn’t considered ‘part’ of a voting bloc..it’s isolated. I am not sure exactly what states she ‘brings’ back into the Republican fold.

DeMint, Barbour hopefully can regain the South (FL, NC and VA) and someone like Ryan from the Midwest hopefully could bring along WI and make OH, IN competitive. If it was Christie, and he brought NJ that would be HUGE.

Sarah has ‘ideals’ (which I like) but someone like DeMint has the same ideals along with cred and regional pull. I’d vote for Sarah in a NY minute, but just not sure what exactly makes her electable at this point.

I don’t like or use the term RINO. My contention is that those who are or have been inside-the-beltway are tarnished. Something about that place changes people. Obviously, we need those people such as DeMint, Bachmann, etc. in the congress but I don’t want them as president. That office I have reserved for outsiders who aren’t a part of the good ol’ boys club. We need a different perspective, a different attitude in the office of president.

Palin is running, Perry isn’t but I predict if Sarah gets the nomination she’ll select Perry as her VP choice
