SEATTLE -- The head of a hammerhead shark found off Alki Beach over the weekend has local scientists scratching their heads.
West Seattle beachcombers have seen it all lately. A dead cow washed up last week. This week, a part of shark, the signature part of a hammerhead shark, washed up.

Now how did it get in here, is the question. Swim? From the meat locker of an Asian ship? Who knows, but if it swam into Puguet Sound, and this far North, this would be a first.
Shark got in a tussle with a cow when the cow was in “her time.” Fight ended in a draw.

Any connection with the feet that keep washing up?

“Tonight’s special guest is Linda Moulton Howell reporting from Seatle”
There’s no mystery presented on Coast to Coast that can’t be solved by four meddling teenagers and a Great Dane.
Seems almost unthinkable that a hammerhead would be found this far north. I wonder if there isn’t another explanation... like the head got thrown in the water down at the Pike Place market. One of those fish markets probably features hammerhead shark, I’ll bet?

About 10 years ago, I took an early morning jog along the beach at Camp Rilea, OR, just outside of Astoria, and came upon the washed up head of a basking shark. Of course there was little mystery how it got there once I noticed some Orcas frolicking a few hundred yards off-shore.
Of course, just north of Seattle, they are finding human feet still inside shoes washing up on shore.

Sharks aren’t the top predators of the ocean. Close, but a clear #2.
I'm not concerned about how far north it was. I'm freaked that a shark's head could swim at all!
Didn’t a dead cow wash up on a Washington beach the other day? Maybe something larger is off-shore and looking for a balanced diet.
Perhaps the hammerhead shark got into a religious argument with the vicious allahu akbar shark and ended up losing the debate.

The best theory going on the human feet is that the feet covered with shoes is the only part not able to be eaten by the crabs. They devour the rest of the body quite quickly, leaving the feet, which get washed up on shore. Still leaves the question though who the feet belong too, and how did they die?
I saw a photo of that head and it looks like the smooth hammerhead.
Smooth hammerheads get as far north as mid California.
If that shark specie did swim into your area it would be very unusual. - Tom
