On Those “Draconian” Spending Cuts
The Heritage Foundation ^ | February 8th, 2011 | Brandon Stewart

Posted on 02/08/2011 1:48:29 PM PST by mdittmar

Last week, House Budget Committee Chair Paul Ryan (R-WI) outlined $58 billion in non-security domestic spending cuts. Within hours, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) attacked the proposal calling it “unworkable” and “even more draconian than we originally anticipated.” But these outcries were hardly unexpected considering Washington’s spending addiction. As National Review’s Rich Lowry commented in his column this morning, “There is a complicated mathematical symbol practically unknown to the House Appropriations Committee. It’s called the minus sign.”

In response to these outcries, Matthias Shapiro, the creator of Obama Budget Cuts Visualization and The National Debt Road Trip videos, has created another new video which puts this hysteria into perspective.

But while we can be assured that this and all efforts to curb government’s growth will be met by fierce opposition, that should not discourage legislators from moving forward. As we noted last week, much more spending reductions and fundamental entitlement reform will be necessary for our country to regain its fiscal health.

$58 billion is only about 5% of the deficit. It’s NOTHING! LITERALLY!

I once asked a Pol who used the term “Draconian Cuts” who Draco was. She said it’s a term, not a person.

A good start would be to defund entire agencies like the FCC and EPA, cut all support of NPR and get rid of farm subsidies especially ethanol.

Barry want’s to spend $58 billion on choo choo trains. Why is $50 billion a draconian cut but $58 billion is not a draconian spending increase?

Harry ‘the war is lost’ Reid is still pulling burrs out of his rear with the guarantee of no earmarks for at least the next two years. His union goon puppet-masters in NV are crushed at the reality that their funds are being cut off. Harry is going to be remain one angry SOB.

Deficit is expected to be $1,500 billion. Cuts in this time of national crisis seem to hit the extreme pain level at 3.8% of the deficit and and 1.8% of the total budget.

NPR should be the test case. There is no reason to borrow money to support Yet Another Television Station (YATS).

I had always figured that it had something to do with Dracula.

However, I see that it actually has to do with a 7th century BC, Athenian statesman and lawmaker, whose code of laws prescribed death for almost every offence.

Sounds like vitriolic rhetoric to me.

They said his laws were “written in blood”. He lamented that there were no lesser penalties for lesser crimes.

“She said it’s a term, not a person.”

I always thought that guy got a raw deal. For your name to drift into common parlance as synonymous with “severe,” “mean,” and “cruel,” you’d think you’d have done something to deserve it. Like kill your brother or drown an entire city. All he did (legendarily) was deliver Athens from an age of Might Makes Right, “woe to the conquered,” and blood feuds to the Rule of Law. How dare he!

$58 billion is a joke. If we can’t cut $100 billion this year we are doomed. What is the frickin issue??? We ramped up spending by a TRILLION dollars over the past two years. Why cant it be cut by a Trillion dollars over the next two or three years? Someone needs to explain that or I’ll be voting out the incumbent every time I vote from now on until these morons get it. And they have the nerve to mock the Tea Party or claim the Tea Party is “extreme.” I wonder if they are so stupid that they don’t realize that spending has to be cut.

“They said his laws were ‘written in blood’”

They would say that, wouldn’t they? People love to exaggerate.

I wonder how people punished eachother before Draco wrote things down. Probably with gentle tsk-tsks, conciliatory embraces, and campfire songs. /s
