Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) has announced that he will not run for reelection in 2012.
Webb's decision, long anticipated by many in Virginia politics, will make his seat more difficult to hold for his party. Ex-Sen. George Allen (R), who lost the seat in 2006 to Webb, is running to win it back, and a handful of other GOP candidates are also running. Some Democrats hope ex-Gov. Tim Kaine will decide to run for the seat, but he has given no indication yet that he is interested.

That’s a good Washington Post rendition of the story.
Macaca was a made up word. Trust me, on that. It was not widely known to have any usage in the English langauge until two Decmoratic bloggers spent several hours editing both the video and the wikipedia entries.
The consultant Allen hired pissed off the Washington Post and they returned the favor with a vengeance. Said consultant also convinced Allen to go on the apology tour.
That’s what sank the campaign. That and the fact that the consultant never planned how to win a Senate race, he was looking to the White House.
Allen’s biggest problem was listening to that consultant.
All that being said, Allen lost by less than half a percent on a night when Republicans were getting slaughtered nationwide.

That probably sealed the deal for Webb. But in reality, I don't think he enjoyed being in the Senate or that he ever really wanted to serve more than one term.
Wow, that must mean that I'm somehow clairvoyant, because I knew EXACTLY what the word was (and how it was meant) the minute I saw the tape.
If I get a hit on tonight's lottery numbers, I'll give you a heads up.
Allen said something stupid. It wasn't some made-up word that popped into his head. He knew it to be a racially pejorative term, and used it that way. His denial rang decidedly hollow.
Good news for conservatives!
I'd love to see a conservative Republican majority with veto override and impeachment conviction strength (66+ seats) but that would be just wishful and overly optimistic, even naive thinking on my part. But it is something to dream about. Just imagine Obama vetos of Republican legislation being overridden all of the time. He would end up just spending even more time on the golf course or jetting around the world on the taxpayers dime.
I hope so, I live in Montana.
BUT - though we have had several Republican senators (and Denny Rheberg would be a fine one - he's universally loved as our sole congressman) - in the history of Montana only ONE Republican senator has ever been reelected (Conrad Burns) and John Tester defeated him (Burns).
We are a solid Red state on the Presidential front, but we do elect some real doofuses as senators - like Max Bachus (Phew!).
I hope it works. We need the seat back. But, you just know that stuff is coming up again.
Webb’s departure is unusual. Does he have a skeleton?
Radtke is a Tea Party activist leader from Richmond who organized the various local tea-parties into a state wide federation of Tea Parties before stepping down to run for the US senate. In Q4 she raised over 100k, and has continued to raise signifigant amounts of money toward her election. She has been very critical of George Allen who is the other declared candidate and who (imo) is too closely tied to the Republican establishment.
AFAIK the only other conservative considering the race is Corey Stewart who is a county level GOP chairman. Radtke looks like the real deal. She has been embraced by the Tea Party Caucus in DC and my expectation is that she'll get backed by De Mint's Senate conservative fund as well as Tea Party Express.

FYI, down here in Virginia, Allen is still well liked. I think the average Virginian has learned a bit since the media stunt that got Webb elected. As we all know, there will be other candidates, some decent, some not worth a diddley squat despite their connections. Allen will hold his own, you can count on that.
You know the old saying, “fool me once”? Well, we won’t be fooled again.
I really, really hope the Dems put Teh Eyebrow in the race as their candidate.
