So long as "aligning" includes an actual change of beliefs, then yes, this is good.

Rural Southern Democrats who are switching parties to the Republicans don't have to "realign" their beliefs. They are leaving a party which no longer has any room for their beliefs.

For the umpteenth time, understand that -- until the last decade -- there was no Republican Party in the rural counties of the South. No organization, no primary, no nothing. If a conservative wanted to win an office -- in the county or in the state legislature -- he had to run as a Democrat!

The voters are conservative, the elected officials are conservative. But only recently has there been a local Republican party organization to belong to.
