Rural Southern Democrats who are switching parties to the Republicans don't have to "realign" their beliefs. They are leaving a party which no longer has any room for their beliefs.
For the umpteenth time, understand that -- until the last decade -- there was no Republican Party in the rural counties of the South. No organization, no primary, no nothing. If a conservative wanted to win an office -- in the county or in the state legislature -- he had to run as a Democrat!
The voters are conservative, the elected officials are conservative. But only recently has there been a local Republican party organization to belong to.
