I’m sorry but years ago when times were tough good poor people did not line up for a handout they got a second or third or fourth job to help themselves out. They did not become the moocher class .ike today.I worked with a divorced Mom in 1978 who was holding down 4 part time jobs and going to school part time to feed her two kids. When you go to the parking lot and those on foodstamps are driving nicer cars than you are it is very hard to think of them as anything else except moochers.

And some of you are posting at the wrong site for your ultra liberal views! If there are children involved then their parents should be doing something to feed them and not be sitting around collecting.,

One of the things I've seen over the years.... which really reinforces my views....is having helped "those less fortunates" who choose to live in poverty. You can help them over and over...but they resist helping themselves. They see working at McDonald's as beneath them.....or mowing yards.."a kid's job"....so they whine and put their hand out. Heck, I can't even get someone to show up and do yard work...with MY equipment!

For those who want to beat that biblical drum about helping the poor.... The bible is also explicit in defining a "sluggard"..

AMEN! I’ve long said that the only thing welfare ever taught anyone to do was to hold their hand out and waitt in line. What is supposed to be temporary is seen as a way of life. One of my friends works in the local materity ward at the hospital and says she sees so many welfare teens who the first thing they do after giving birth is not to hold their child but be on the phone to their caseworker wanting the new benefits they are entitled to.

Boy can I relate to your friend. I did home health for over 15 years... and what you described is "the norm"....not the exception. In fact, I've seen very little true poverty which isn't self-imposed.

I remember a study done some years ago in Portland, I believe... about the poor street people. The conclusion was they were there willingly, refusing to be taken in to shelters or taught job skills. (I suspect some were mentally ill)

Call me simplistic but I don’t see any reason why anyone in America should be poor. I’ve never seen poor East Indians in America or Asians for that matter. I’ve seen plenty of poor blacks and Hispanics though. The difference is Hispanics tend to be poor but work. But many of them are illegally here so that’s another matter in and of itself. And just what does ‘’poor’’ mean these days anyway? Poor as in something Dickensian? Poor as in Ma and Pa Joad? Or does it mean under-educated, under-motivated to become educated so as to get a good job and not be poor? I believe in help for someone in temporary need but not permanent need, a ‘’neediness’’ that seems to become a permanent state of affairs.

Whatever LaineyDee, You nailed me Just like you nailed every poor person. WOW I have been under the assumption that I was conservative since before I “came on board” in 2004, but now I see the error of my ways. I see that you are unbiased and open minded about NOT grouping everyone together. Obviously YOU know ALL. I wish I could be as knowlegeable on EVERYONE ELSE like you are. You not only know that I am a lib, but that EVERY poor person is a piece of crap. Thank you for showing me the error of my ways. I sincerly hope you NEVER need any help, after your posts, I can only assume you are well off and good for you. I can only thank God that YOU CANT control the people who WILL gladly help others. BTW THERE IS NOTHING HUMBLE ABOUT YOUR POST TO ME.

Maybe not simplistic, but, truly snobbish and ignorant.

Snobbish? I don’t think so. Why do some make it here and others don’t? Ignorance is what makes poverty. Ignorance of the mind and spirit. There is no reason at all anyone should be poor in America. You can do anything here you put your mind to, thousands do it all the time.

Wow just like LaineyDee, YOU know ALL.

“but there are other Hard Working Poor People out there who need our help

Sounds to me like you are condoning welfare right there.”

You do realize you said I condone theft, then backed up your theory by telling me I condone welfare? (This seems to be a different type of thinking) You do realize WELFARE is LEGAL and THEFT is ILLEGAL? I am not saying I condone it, I am saying welfare is NOT a crime. And again those who abuse the system are wrong,(AS I HAVE SAID SINCE MY FIRST POST) Now go ahead like LaineyDee and accuse me of picking your pocket or whatnot. BTW I/we are NOT on welfare, my whole family works. AND...Do you really think I could NOT use the monies from our checks that goes to the welfare ranks?

Chris, Chris, Chris.... I was referring to the government mandates......not you personally. You were the one who made it personal.....and accused the rest of us of being elitists.......when you have no idea of what our stations are in life. We are tired of paying for career welfare recipients and the victim mentality. You're all over the map on this thing.

If you're truly poor and want a better life... go to college or trade school, get an education and get a better paying job. If there are no jobs where you live.....then move to where you can get one. That’s the beauty of America. You have a choice.

It sounds like those scheming communist scumbags are trying to chase part of the Democrat party "base" to the south.

You do realize WELFARE is LEGAL and THEFT is ILLEGAL?

You do realize that there is no constitutional provision for the government to loot one taxpayer and bestow the largesse on another? I never said welfare was ILLEGAL, just that it was theft. And so it is - legalized theft. Legalizing theft and calling it WELFARE doesn't alter the fact that it's theft. Legalizing murder (ala any number of socialist regimes during the last 100 years) and calling it racial cleansing or the "great leap forward" doesn't alter the fact that it's murder. Accepting the government's viewpoint, that the government can do anything that it wants as long as it passes a law to do so shows that you are not by any means a conservative despite what you claim, but ideologically in the same camp with 0bama and Pelosi.
