by Maayana Miskin Follow Israel news on and .
Rabbi Yaakov Yosef, the son of Sephardi leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, is facing arrest over his approbation for the book Torat HaMelech (The Torah of the King). He has stated that he will not cooperate with police.
The Torah is under investigation, and I have no intention of cooperating in an investigation of a book that is solely about Torah, Rabbi Yaakov Yosef told Arutz Sheva's Hebrew-language news service.

Dozens of Religious Zionist leaders sign petition addressed to prime minister against 'attempt to block rabbis' freedom of expression through severe, unacceptable, anti-democratic measures' Kobi Nahshoni
Some 70 leading Zionist-religious rabbis - including city rabbis, yeshiva chiefs and educators - issued a petition Thursday protesting the arrest warrant take out against Rabbi Dov Lior following his refusal to report to a police inquiry in the "King's Torah" affair.
"We see this as a disgrace towards the torah and those who follow it," the petition stated. "This is an attempt to block the rabbis' freedom of expression through severe, unacceptable and anti-democratic measures."
“Jews don’t follow Torah they follow Talmud.”
Um, if they follow the Talmud, they also follow the Torah because the Torah is part of the Talmud...
From another article.
The prohibition ‘Thou Shalt Not Murder’ applies only “to a Jew who kills a Jew,” write Rabbis Yitzhak Shapira and Yosef Elitzur of the West Bank settlement of Yitzhar. Non-Jews are “uncompassionate by nature” and attacks on them “curb their evil inclination,” while babies and children of Israel’s enemies may be killed since “it is clear that they will grow to harm us.”
Ahh, the old “nits make lice” and “evil by nature” theories. These ideologies do not have a positive past.
Question, if a Jew should not consider killing a non-Jew to be murder, why should a non-Jew consider killing a Jew to be murder?
Nope. The Torah are the five books of the Old Testament traditional authored by Moses. The Law.
The Talmud is a massive compilation of commentaries on the Torah that began to be written down around 200.
“Question, if a Jew should not consider killing a non-Jew to be murder, why should a non-Jew consider killing a Jew to be murder?”
Personally I am from the universal humanism side of that argument too...
This is one of the few pieces of media in any form in Israel that has been attacked by the full power of the State using the “incitement to racism” clause of the Basic Laws since Kahane’s party was outlawed under the Basic Law.
So first time in almost a generation it’s bubbling to the top of Israeli society.
Immediately a pretty wide range of religious leaders and free speech advocates came to defend the freedom of speech,... it’s going to become a serious issue going forward.
It could end Netanyahu’s Prime Ministership if the Sephardic-Zionist parties make it a cause célèbre and walk out on the fragile coalition...
Exactly. And this book Torat HaMelech isn’t Torah either, no matter what they’re calling it.
I have no problem with the rabbi having the right to write and publish what he did.
I reserve the right to use my own freedom of speech to point out that IMO the rabbi is a pig for doing so. Insult intended.
Sounds good to me. Why the arrests?
You’re right. Sorry, thought the Talmud was the Torah plus the commentary. It’s not, they are distinct. Ooops...
