To show how worthless the CPAC straw poll is all you have to do is look back at this time in 2007 when Romney came in first and Giuliani came in second. McCain who did not attend, came in 5th and was booed when his name was mentioned - yet look who won the primaries and carried the nomination.

McCain was nearly bankrupt and ready to fold up, then Giuliani imploded. All of the establishment support then reached down into the gutter and pulled McCain out, pushing the other candidates aside. McCain had no grassroots support at all. It was all establishment. I truly hope that’s not what you want.
