Rocky And Republicans
IBD Editorials ^ | February 14, 2011 | The great THOMAS SOWELL

Rocky Marciano was the only heavyweight champion who never lost a single fight in his whole career — and, at the time, he seemed the least likely fighter to do that. In many a boxing match, he was battered, bruised and bleeding.

One of the reasons Marciano took so much punishment in the ring was that he had shorter arms than most other heavyweights. It was easier for others to hit him than for him to hit them.

In a sense, Republicans today are in a similar position in the political arena. With most of the media heavily tilted toward the Democrats, Republicans are going to get hit far more often than they are going to get in their own punches.

The difference is that Rocky Marciano understood from the beginning that he was going to get hit more often, and prepared himself for that kind of fight. His strategy was to concentrate on developing punches powerful enough to nullify his opponents' greater number of punches.

Republicans take the opposite approach from that of Rocky Marciano — and often with opposite results. That may be why they managed to lose both houses of Congress and the White House in recent years, in a country where there are millions more people who call themselves conservatives than there are who call themselves liberals

Reagan is one of the few exceptions to this rule. Of course he started out as a Democrat. Too many Republicans waste so much time whining about getting hit by the media that they have little energy to counterpunch. The other problem is that some of the counterpunching ends up as wild flailing that does little damage to the opponent but does consume their own energy and opens them up to yet more punches from their opponents.

There were better fighters than Marciano, but none with more heart. He fought Louis past his prime and never had to face Liston or Cassius Clay. Still a great fighter. (He beat Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore, so he vanquished all comers). I know that Maricano is only a metaphor here, but its nice to flesh out his story.

Marciano's greatest and last fight came in the last few years of his life, and it occurred in the back seat of a taxi.

Rocky had taken the train from Connecticut to New York, and he had just gotten into a cab outside Grand Central when two young punks jumped into the cab on either side of him and attempted to mug him.

He coldcocked the two punks with just two punches. Straight double KO.

Another part of the problem is that the media is very good at hiding and/or not reporting Republican “talking points”. They are very good at getting out the message for the Democrats. Some would say...intentionally good at it.

The Establishment Republicans are not interested in going toe-to-toe with the Democrats. They are happy with being the minority party. They enjoy being the Democrat’s whipping boy.

“me-yon-airs and be-yon-airs”, tax cuts for the “me-yon-airs and be-yon airs” That's all you heard from the democrats every time they got in front of a microphone last month when Obama agreed to include the over $250,000 in the current rate extension.

I dont think a small Marciano would have done too well against a bigger Liston who had a pile driving jab.

A match against a prime Joe Louis would have been a dandy.

Liston was scary. Without the drugs and the gangsters, who knows what he could have accomplished.

Sowell calls for Republicans to develop knockout punches (metaphor alert!) with which to respond to those like “tax cuts for the rich”, but he doesn’t suggest any, so I guess that’s left as an exercise for the reader.

Thus, here’s my suggestion: “Prosperity for the productive.”

I know he's a little old for the job and probably wouldn't take it if it was served to him on a solid gold platter, but I would LOVE it if Thomas Sowell was our U.S. President.

I love Thomas Sowell.

One of the many things that I admire about Thomas Sowell is the breadth of knowledge that he uses to illustrate his arguments. If only he could be required reading for every university student...

I want to amend my remark:

Thomas Sowell should be required reading for every Republican elected official and potential elected official.

We have affected the language in one very significant way that I can think of - we say “Taxpayer money” instead of “government money” which used to be the standard.

The RATS, and their MSM division will successfully delegate any shutdown of government to the Republicans regardless. NOT a good example, but he’s right on the mark with his analogy in this once again.

Thanks for the ping jaz.
