I don’t think that warning us that your posts are peppered with a dose of hyperbole ameliorates your use of the word “traitor” to describe General Petraeus. Surely there are less offensive ways for you to express your disappointment with him.

The US is one of only a handful of countries that allow their soldiers to vote in elections. In most European countries, when someone becomes a soldier, they give up their right to vote.

Maybe he just doesn’t agree with Gates’ rush to get the queers on board. Or maybe it’s the ROEs. With this administration, it could be any number of things.

At any rate, I doubt this was ocommie’s idea. I think we would have heard rumblings in advance like we did with McCrystal and others.

Just because Petraeus is bailing on ocommie, I don’t think means he’s running for office. I can think of a thousand reasons to want to get shed of ocommie.

No doubt that he cannot stomach whatever Obama is asking him to do.

Running for office, I presume?

Possibly helping the Hillary Clinton campaign?

If you liked McCain you’ll love Petraeus.

Obama is insisting on some stupid and dangerous policy in Afghanistan... that will make him look good in the press.
Probably surrender.

Good for The General. Done a fine job considering the ‘support’ he had.

Petraeus was brilliant in Iraq as a counter-insurgency leader

Yes, after screwing up so badly at first, he made huge necessary adjustments in his approach (unlike, for example, Sec. Rumsfeld, who continued to think in an offensive-operations mindset while denying the existence of the insurgency!).

He listened to the captains and majors and sergeants who saw the problems and solutions, not the birds and stars who gauged performance by how many US taxpayer dollars they could hand out.

This makes a lot of sense and was my first thought. The man is there to win wars. Use the military to defeat the enemy not hold hands and sing kumbaya.
It is not Obama’s style and his hands were probably tied. I am sure that he no more wants to sit there and watch us lose a war than he wants to see Americans die while Obama tries to figure out what it means to be the commander in chief.

Headline’s misleading. He’s not quitting, the Pentagon wants to replace him. He’s been on the front lines a long time.

This could be very bad news...

For who?

We're done in Afghanistan. If Petraeus stays, the end of the misadventure will be his.

Agreed. Petraeus is not being given the freedom to implement his strategy, but instead is being ordered to follow a plan that has no hope of success. I was surprised he stuck with it this long.

I really get the feeling that this has turned into a meaningless war, where our troops are getting killed for nothing, and where the ROEs don’t really even permit them to defend themselves.

About all I can tell from the reports is that the body count keeps going up, and we don’t really seem to be winning anything or getting anywhere. McCrystal and Petraeus are both very capable leaders for this kind of war, but I think their hands have been tied.

I hate to say it for the troops sake but you're likely right. The past 20 years especially the past ten have not been good years for our armed forces. PC ran war has done some very major damage to our own side. It's our own elected leadership in DC on both sides of the party aisle doing that damage.
