Baby Chelsey survives though born at 23 weeks
Chicago Tribune ^ | February 17, 2010 | John Kass

Baby doctors have their schedules, but life doesn't always abide by some official timetable. And so months before Tamika Harris' twin girls were due, she began feeling the pains of labor. One of the daughters began pushing to leave Harris' womb after just 22 weeks and hadn't grown strong enough for the terrible adventure of birth. So Harris was at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, with the pressure and pain. She felt the first twin crowning and shouted for the nurse, who came to speak to her in the calm voice of nurses everywhere. Harris knows that voice. She uses it herself, as a 911 dispatcher for the village of Burnham, talking over the phone to the desperate and the terrified.

I was in a neonatal ICU the other day. They had photos on the wall of the children they had saved. It was amazing how tiny they were at the time of their births. Several were under one pound.

It’s sad that some babies will be given every chance at survival while others will be discarded without a second thought.

What a miracle.

When I had my twins, I had a due date of Feb. 15th. I went into labor the day after Thanksgiving. Thankfully, it was able to be stopped and I spent the next three months on total bedrest. They didn't quite make it to February, and I thought my little 5 pounders were tiny chicken babies.

My son was born January 3rd at 31 weeks. He spent 34 days in NICu and is doing great now. I would look at the little preemies and shudder as I thought of that butcher in Philly delivering babies alive and cutting their cervical spine with scissors. Evil! The NICU nurses were like angels. I hate nurses unions but was impressed with the nurses themselves.

My twin nephews were born at 23 weeks, and survived. Makes me quiver to think about third trimester abortion.

One of my favorite stories: http://www.52best.com/hug.asp Gives me a grateful heart every time I read this, as I am a twin.
