WASHINGTON (AP)—The House has voted to let the Pentagon continue using taxpayer dollars to sponsor NASCAR race teams.
By a 281-148 vote, lawmakers rejected an effort by Minnesota Democratic Rep. Betty McCollum that would have ended the practice. McCollum aides said the Army is spending $7 million on a sponsorship this year, and the Air Force and National Guard are spending additional money.
McCollum said the military spends the funds to place decals on race cars and for a few driver appearances. The armed forces hope the sponsorships will help them attract recruits.

I don’t think it’s wise for congress to dictate minute details of our military’s recruiting programs.
NASCAR is one of the few bargains our government gets. It would be stupid to toss it overboard.
The fact that our military men and women attend races for free with full VIP access is well worth the cost.
Why do I see that the best part of this is that it will raise howls of protest from the left? :)

Personally , I’d sponsor a Red car with a bulldog USMC theme if I had a few million to put it all together.
According to one article I’ve seen, the Army and National Guard get about a third of their new recruits through these programs.
And I’d hate to see it go away now that Panther Racing (IndyCar Series) FINALLY has an American driver in their National Guard car! ;)
Recruiting is marketing and sales. Sponsorships are well worth the money in good will.
I knew an Army bugler who does NASCAR races. Even though it’s technically weekend duty, he loves it because he gets the total VIP treatment with a full access backstage pass to the pits.
Utter failure of the Republican leadership. There is NO WAY that sponsoring a NASCAR team is even REMOTELY Constitutional. And don't give me any "recruiting" nonsense.
Minimal costs - great returns.

My 17 tear old son just made Corporal in his high school ROTC program, what surprised me is that he has an upper level autism called Aspergers, is a bit overweight yet he sails through the courses.
He tells me its because he saw the Army car on NASCAR, of course in my family we are very hardcore NASCAR fans.
My opposition is to the Federal government spending money it does not have for items it has no Constitutional power to do. Given that we are 100% in deficit spending, and are creating 100% of the money the government runs on, I should think it's time to put the frivolous spending aside for a while. Don't you think we can do without ONE YEAR of Army NASCAR advertising without destroying the entire US Army? I do.
And besides, where in the Constitution does it say we must continuously recruit for a standing army? The Founders were against standing armies, and considered them evil. I think a National Guard type system is Constitutional, where "militias" (which is what the Guards really are meant to be) are called up to respond to national threats.
If we don't get back to the Constitution and pare the FedGov down to size, it will eat us.
Just like in NHRA with the US Army Top Fuel car,they have a recruitment program that looks to be very succesful

Great returns are nice when you can afford the investment. We're borrowing millions to put a sticker on the side of a stock car. History will judge us harshly for such idiocy.
