A police officer who said women could avoid sexual assault by not dressing like “sluts” in an address to law students college has apologised.

Constable Michael Sanguinetti made the stunning remark during a meeting about safety at Toronto's York University.

While a more senior officer was talking, Mr. Sanguinetti interrupted and reportedly said: 'You know, I think we’re beating around the bush here. I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this, however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.

A woman doesn’t deserve to be raped regardless of how she dresses but a woman who decides against all common sense to go into the bad part of town winds up getting into trouble. Its all about making the right choice and being a woman doesn’t excuse one from taking care to ensure your own safety.

Rape, like most crime, is a crime of opportunity. IIRC, the studies I've seen that address it indicate rape victims are most likely to be the people least able to defend themselves. A small woman is more likely to be raped than a large woman because she's usually easier to control physically. Young girls are more likely to be raped because they are easy to control and are more likely to do what they're told. Drunk women are unable to resist, and women that are isolated in an area where they can't be heard will be easier to overpower.

Dressing provocatively will probably make a woman more likely to receive crude advances, but being isolated in a rough area makes her far more likely to be a rape victim.

As William Muny said, "Deservin's got nothing to do with it."

You're absolutely correct. People don't deserve to die for forgetting to look both ways before crossing the street, but some of them do.

I think I would have chosen another word than "slut". Like provocative, or promiscuous perhaps.

The difference is having the intelligence, the civilissification, the HUMANITY, to understand the conditions in another persons life that would make a (presumably) young girl dress like a slut.

Anyone male who would harm a woman or child isn’t really a MAN. Not in my world.

The thing is, IMO, it takes a man to teach a boy how to be a man.

It takes a woman (IMO) to teach a girl how to be a woman.

Any variance in the aforementioned will produce some deviations.

But maybe, JUST MAYBE, all that person is asking is this.

WILL YOU BE MY FRIEND????

The truth is always painful. Wear a mini-skirt and fishnet stockings; should a man assume the female to be a virginal librarian with no interest in sex?

Yes, let’s not drive nice cars, because we may be carjacked. Le’s not live in expensive homes, because we may be robbed. If rape is about looks, why do the elderly and nuns get raped?

So if a guy goes out wearing only shorts in the Castro district, he should’nt complain if he gets raped?

Why should he assume anything? For all he knows, she could be a lesbian.

The guy's an idiot.

Does he think that only young women who wear mini-skirts and wander around streets at night are rape victims? Rape never ocurred in the old days when women wore full-length dresses and long sleeves? Rape never occurs in the daytime? To old women? To unattractive women? What advice does he have for women who are raped in their own homes?

Sure, dressing like sluts doesn’t justify rape but it is inviting rape for sure.

Thanks, you raise a good point and I agree. I consider all American and most European women to be lesbo’s in waiting, so I only consider South American (esp. Cuban) and Asian women when I’m looking for a real woman.

Which is why you get an escort to come along with you at night. Did that many, many times at university.

If I’m parked at home I leave the door open, but take everything valuable out of the car. Saves me getting a window smashed. You are right though, it’s not about beauty but about power.

Would the cop tell men not to wear nice suits or expensive shoes? Might push the buttons on one of the ‘twisted’ ones - causing a robbery...

Where I live, it is against the law to leave your car running, without you in it, on cold mornings to warm up. It apparently poses too much of a temptation to car thieves. Car owners are ticketed and fined.

Rhetorical question, but how prevalent is rape in Islamic societies?

Modesty seems to be a dirty word. I would never let my daughter dress like some teens do today.(she is in her 40’s and her daughters dress modestly also.) It starts with the parents...

I am in total agreement.

Teens should be smart enough (they ain’t) to know that if you dress and act like a slut (or a thug or a _____) you will probably be treated like one.
