Malloy's Approach to Budget Mess is Unique
Greenwich Time ^ | February 19, 2011 | SUSAN HAIGH, Associated Press

Posted on 02/20/2011 7:15:46 AM PST by Stingray51

While other governors are waging tense battles with state employees, proposing deep spending cuts and taking no-tax-increase pledges to cover their budget shortfalls, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy -- whose wealthy state faces the largest per capita deficit in the nation -- is taking a different tack.

... Malloy is unapologetic about proposing a budget that raises taxes on everything from personal income to haircuts....

Malloy also admits he's "not one of those people who dislikes government," a defiant political statement these days given the national tea party movement and demands for major cuts in government spending....

"He's different in the sense that he is not putting all the blame for the pickle the state is in on government," said Pagani, a chief of staff for former Connecticut Gov. John G. Rowland, a Republican. "He believes there is a certain level of government that people need and require, and if you're going to require that kind of government as a taxpayer you're going to have to pay your fair share." ...

Brendan O'Connor, a railroad conductor from Milford, said he's thinking about leaving the state. "If the taxes go up much higher, I'll move out," he said. "I just can't do it. Everything is so expensive here. I don't know how the average family makes it." ...

"What can you really cut in Connecticut in state government," asked Malloy. "We could do what Arizona is doing and cut back Medicaid. So we'll tell people that a life-saving kidney transplant, we're not going to pay for? Do you think the people in Connecticut would do that? I don't. I'm too proud of the people of Connecticut. I know them too well to think that they would allow someone to die of a curable disease. I don't see that."

Fair share huh? So is the good governor going to do the noble thing and impose or raise taxes on the people who pay little to nothing in tax?

My SIL and her family live there. They both have great jobs, one with a DOD contractor and other with a pharmaceutical company, and their kids have always attended private schools. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

As a Cter, Malloy with big majorities in the legislature will get his huge tax increases. He did ask the unions for concessions to which they replied, raise taxes more.

The only thing left to do is move out. I’m nearing retirement and will sell out. Hopefully the housing market will not tank more.

All this is doing is allowing profligate spending to continue, so that the eventual downfall, aka Wisconsin and Californicatia will happen a bit later on (only worse).

Well, maybe if the government weren't conditioning people to think that the government should pay for everything, they would either have catastrophic medical insurance to cover situations like this, or they would think seriously about whether or not they should get such an operation. Instead, there's this attitude of entitlement... just because someone is sick doesn't mean they have a right to wring money out of everyone else to pay for their treatment.

Let's see how well CT has been doing in the past with its tax policies. Here's the Forbes interactive Map: Where Americans Are Moving of Fairfield County and New Haven County. The red lines (outward migration) speak for themselves. I don't see ANY black lines (inward migration), do you?

what a great argument for federalism! The states will deal with this in their own ways. The voters and businesses of CT will decide, same as everywhere else.

Maybe this will help the fine folks of CT vote in a Republican, scratch that, a CONSERVATIVE for Joes seat!

Connecticut has been losing jobs to southern states.

Reasons: taxes and power costs

This is a really stupid move on the governors part.

Yeah - the people in states with high taxes move to states with lower taxes and then they end up wanting the same things from which they tried to escape.

I have an idea for Malloy.

Post armed guards at the border crossings.
You can cover your spending deficits by confiscating property from all of the refugees.

You freakin' Communist MORON!
You're gonna KILL this state!
People, like me, are going to LEAVE IN DROVES, you IDIOT!
Then who the hell are you going to tax???

But Golden Goose sure tastes good with Sauce Béarnaise, doesn't it?
You Marxist MORON!

Doubtful.

First off, McMahon is making noises how she wants Joe's seat now.

Second off, last election the Tea Party was sold out by CT GOP State Central who backed McMahon because of her money and then actively sabotaged all viable Tea Party candidates.
The result?
Not one single Federal seat for CT went to a Republican, not one.

If there is going to be a shift to the right in CT, all of the Tea Party Conservatives here know that the CT GOP State Central committee has to be completely replaced first.
No easy task.

More likely that Joe's seat is going to go Marxist or RINO.

The wife and I are already looking at out of state options.
The only thing that has kept us here and is still keeping us here is her elderly dad.

Connecticut will become what NJ is trying to avoid becoming: illegal aliens, the permanent underclass, and the government workers to provide services to them.

I predict our CT housing market will go into freefall.

Wish I never moved back and could have convinced my parents to move out after they retired. I only came back to help them out around the house.

I wish everyone understood this as you do. Our Founders saw the States as laboratories of democracy, and if CT wants to blow up its lab and make the state affordable only to high wage earners, let them go ahead. Raising taxes is legal. The people and businesses that don't like it can vote with their feet. That may sound callous, but the people of CT who put him in office are the callous ones. They had to know he would do this. He's a Democrat.

True, according to this exit poll, the rich actually voted for Malloy over Foley last November.

CT Governor Exit Poll

They got what they voted for and let them live with the consequences.
