Leader: Wis. Senate to convene without Democrats
Yahoo/AP ^ | 2/20/11 | RYAN J. FOLEY

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin's senate majority leader says the chamber will convene to pass non-spending bills and act on appointments Tuesday even if minority Democrats remain out of state.

Republican Sen. Scott Fitzgerald told The Associated Press on Sunday that he would be reviewing which bills and appointees to schedule for action. He says senators can't wait around "twiddling their thumbs" until the Democrats return.

Fourteen Democrats fled to Illinois last week to delay action on a budget bill that would effectively eliminate collective bargaining rights for most public employees. Republicans need 20 of 33 members to have a quorum to pass any spending bill but only a simple majority of 17 for other items.

Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller says Democrats will not return until Gov. Scott Walker is ready to compromise on his labor proposal.

1. Runaway legislators will be fired. Their seats will be filled by a different qualified citizen each day from the galleries and hallways of the legislative buildings until special elections can be held.

“What happens if nobody calls for a quorum and all votes are by voice vote?”

Great question.

Senate draws a wild card, and raises the stakes. Let’s see what the rats do next.

Agreed. Those 5 items you listed are a good start. We should try to come up with 5 more. Get the laws passed.

I bet if they started on the 5 you mentioned - the Dems would come rushing back.

If this was the private sector, they would be considered to have abandoned their jobs after 3 days””””

IF I was still running a business & I had employees who were deliberately not coming to work & had literally fled to another state, I would have already done the following:

Stop all credit cards in the name of the company, while notifying in writing that ANY charges occurred after 5 PM on Tues of last week would not be honored, as they would be considered UNAUTHORIZED charges to my company credit cards.

Cut off all Cell phones in the company name

Cut off all internet access in the company name

Cut off all airline priviledges in the company name

Cut off all vehicle leases in the company name

Notify the insurance company which carried the policies on those same vehicles that I apparently had a mutiny on my hands & that I wanted insurance cancelled in the shortest time possible.

IF any vehicles were owned by the company, I would announce publically that if those vehicles were not inside the confines of the company property within 24 hours after 5 PM on Tues, I would file stolen vehicles reports with the local police, state police or sheriff’s offices. I would make it clear that I would press charges about the vehicles. I would send certified return receipt letters to their household addresses, notifying them of this action on my part.

Refuse to pay any expense reports that cover the time frames of the missing employees.

Notify carriers of company health benefits that we had absent employees, who may or may not be fired very soon. I would send certified/return receipt letters to their homes/families notifying them of a cut off of health benefits looming.

Notify carriers of company pension/401 plans that missing employees were in jeopardy of being fired. Letter about health benefits would include info about pensions, etc.

IF ANY of these missing employees DARED to show up at my company with ANY KIND of a ‘Doctor’s excuse’, I would audit thru a lawyer & investigator the doctor’s records to determine the exact time the employee called for an appointment-—when that appointment was held—what the records of any ailments were that the employee presented— & copies of the prescriptions this doctor told them to obtain & use.

IF the doctor didn’t comply, I would ask the state board of medical licensing to audit & find out if any doctor was committing fraud to assist my absent employees. I would ask for punishment if fraud was found.

As difficult as it is to get ANY kind of medical appointment- I find it very hard to believe that all those ‘teachers’ could have gotten an appointment & a prescription in such a hurry in massive numbers.

ANY employee found on the tapes of the marching protesstors who tried to turn in a ‘sick day’ piece of paperwork would be told to prove they were ‘sick’ when we have them on tape marching & hollering & being generally foolish.

In general, I would yank their chain & make sure I didn’t have such employees on my roster in the future.

Fire them & re-hire where necessary. Cull the herd as necessary.

Cull out the collective bargaining portion of the current budget bill and vote on it as a stand-alone non-budget bill. >>>>>>>

Seems like a no-brainer to me. Send out notices that this separate bill is lawful to pass with or without them. The AWOL Democrats can come and debate it or sit in Illinois or stay shut-ins at home

“...if so wouldn’t the seat of government be wherever they had a quorum?”

They need to go one block off the Capitol Square. I’m betting enough of the missing Democrats are holed up in the ONLY Cigar & Martini Bar that they exempted from our State-Wide Smoking Ban...

Just a thought! :)

This ought to open a can of worms...

Jackson, MI is the disputed birthplace of the Republican Party.
Undisputed is the fact that the first official meeting of the group that actually called itself "Republican" was held in Jackson under the Oaks on July 6, 1854.

but it is the Dems who have painted themselves into a corner..they have no options.

Indeed they have themselves so beholden to the union that they cannot do their sworn duties.

Just wondering is anyone has the time to reseach and post the last election results for the 14 Dems who are AWOL. Curious as to which ones might be the most vulnerable, and whom we should try to pressure to return...or is it a mass suicide pact?

6. Demand that each & every county registrar of voters FREEZE their current voters rolls & require EVERYONE to re-register, with authentic ID.

7. Find a way to prevent students at the UW from voting in Madison & at other towns of satellite campuses & ALSO voting absentee at their parents addresses- both in & out of state. The students brag about doing such & they think it is ‘funny’. It must be stopped.

8. Place penalties on those who vote illegally. If person is a legit USA citizen, blackball them for life from ever voting in Wisconsin again. Think seriously about yanking their University enrollment & taking their driver’s licenses for about 5 years. There has to be a serious penalty for such behavior.

ha HA

Banning collective bargaining for government workers doesn't strike me as being budget issue.

Hey, why stop there? Can you say "right to work"?
