Two Republican state lawmakers are trying to make it illegal to practice Shariah law in Tennessee.

Sen. Bill Ketron said his bill aims to "curb homegrown terrorism," while those of the Islamic faith say Shariah law doesn't teach people to be terrorists.

Islam and the building of mosques like the one in Antioch have gotten a lot of attention over the past few months, but now the attention is on this proposed bill would make practicing Shariah law a felony.

"It's in the news every week that someone is calling jihad," Ketron said. "We have to step forward and try to pass some type of legislation."

Tennessee leads the way! Ketron is right. I hope the Republican General Assembly has the nerve to declare that sharia law has no place in the United States.

There is no law in the US that supplants US law; in theory, no other law is accepted and we shouldn’t even have to worry about Islamic law in our country. But as things are, it might be good to state this in very clear terms: no sharia. Ever.

Imam Mahamed Ahmed of the Islamic Center of Nashville said Shariah law simply means "path or way of life." "It's basically very similar to the 10 commandments: Don't kill, don't steal," said Ahmed. He said nothing in Shariah law teaches people to be terrorists.

It seems awfully strange that terrorism and Islam seem to go hand in glove.

Declaring that sharia law shall not be practiced in place of the state and federal laws is not unconstitutional. In fact our own US Constitution states as much.

Every expert on Islam from the 17th century to the present time are in agreement that the civil (secular) side of islam CANNOT be separated from the religious side of the coin.

The intractable problem for our republican democracy is the casual way that islam was simply assumed to be a religion as is every other of the world's large religions.

I guarantee that if any rational person reads just 6 books about historical islam written by the past victims, the important fatal combination will be clearly seen as unacceptable for any civilized modern nation on earth.
