ClimateGate: Assembly upholds right to subpoena

The Virginia House of Delegates blocked an attempt last week by Democratic lawmakers to remove the attorney general’s power to issue subpoenas for academic research at state universities.

The proposed bill came as a response to the ongoing investigation launched by the office of Attorney General and University alumnus Ken Cuccinelli, demanding the University surrender papers and e-mails related to the work of Michael Mann, climate scientist and former University professor in the department of environmental sciences.

Cuccinelli has filed multiple civil investigative demands to review Mann’s e-mails and documents. The attorney general is accusing Mann of using manipulated or deceitful data pertaining to climate change to obtain taxpayer-funded research grants, and hopes to acquire documents that will enable him to prosecute Mann under the Virginia Fraud Against Taxpayers Act, Colloquially dubbed Climategate, an internet leak in 2009 released thousands of stolen documents from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit that implied a manipulation of data in support of the global warming hypothesis.

Some members of the academic community say they are outraged by the House’s action.

“What we have here is a political actor seeking to intimidate scholars,” Law Prof. Richard Schragger said, ”That is quite dangerous to the entire concept of academic freedom.”

My my...the Dems do spend a lot of time stalling, diverting and blocking don’t they? It’s almost as if the rule of law and seeking the truth is anathema to them....

Oh, give me a break!

If these Professors and Scholars are taking money from the Government that the Governments took from the people via taxes. Then they should be under scrutiny to insure that the funds aren’t being wasted or worse used to attack the Taxpayers who were the original source of funds.

It was pretty obvious from the East Anglia e-mails and the investigation of other researchers who have examined Mann’s “hockey stick” graph that Mann’s work borders on outright fraud and without question was academically dishonest. Mann should be called to account especially if he received government funds in support of his research.

Mann should be worried. It's one thing to delete embarrassing emails to avoid them being included in an FOIA request.

Destroying embarrassing evidence when requested by an Attorney General as part of a criminal investigation can land him in prison.

How is manipulating data considered scholarship? One would think that the academic community would want to preserve its reputation for objective research and honest interpretation of that research. haha, ok, so maybe not.

Some Democrats in the General Assembly have responded to the issue by arguing the investigation has taken place only because of the political implications of Mann’s research.

So they're admitting that Mann's "research" is political and not scientific.

Imagine that.

Michael Mann is an absolute fraud. I saw the program source code he wrote to create the “hockey stick” graph used to “prove” man-made global warming. The program was deliberately fudging numbers to create the pattern that Mann was looking for. The guy should be in jail.

Corrupt filthy rats are running. Isn’t it amazing how many rats scurry around when the spotlight is on them. No wonder the Country is in so much trouble. We must keep up the pressure to show Americans how corrupt behind the liberal scene is.

A minor correction to the article, if I may:
...documents from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit that implied a confirmed pervasive manipulation of data in support of the global warming hypothesis.
