Thanks, Drumbo! I laughed a lot to all that comedy. Some of it I hadn’t heard in many a year. The Mike Oldfield music is among the best. Won’t you agree?

Keep your head up, the sticks on the skins and life in the balance.

The Mike Oldfield music is among the best. Won’t you agree?
I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a pleasure to field FReeper request.

However, Mike Oldfield's New Age music doesn't do much for me. I'm no critic, in fact, I hate critics, having been a victim of their "I know the way but can't drive the car" mentality for far too many years. Dale Carnegie once said, "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain - and most fools do." My favorite author, Robert Heinlein said, "All critics ever do is come down from the hills after the battle is over and shoot the wounded."

So, while I am loath to criticize, Mr. Oldfield's work is just not my cup of tea. The performance you posted from You Tube was entertaining and I previewed the entire CD as it downloaded, but it's not something that I will enjoy again anytime soon. Once was enough.

Perhaps the original "Tubular Bells" was innovative, although it's a time tested formula of stating a theme and performing variations while building to a climax. "Ravel's Bolero" is an example that jumps to mind. And while uncountable artists have given their own interpretations of Ravel's masterpiece (Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Joe Walsh to name a few), Ravel himself was content to move on to create an entire library of master works.

That Oldfield is still plowing the same ground after almost 40 years is remarkable. All artists are condemned to perform their greatest hit(s) to satisfy their fans, and they often rework their original versions to bring them up-to-date, and there's no argument that the music industry is top-heavy with "one-trick ponies". I once worked as a sub with Chubby Checker's back-up band and with-in two weeks I was sick and tired of playing "The Twist", "The Peppermint Twist", "Let's Twist Again", et. al., night after night. For me it was torture, for Chubby it's his bread & butter and for his fans it's what they pay to hear, so there's no accounting for tastes or motivation. God bless 'em all, but I really can't say I much agree that Mike is among the best. It beats elevator Muzak to be sure, and I even posted "Tubular Bells" just a few weeks ago when I featured Movie music, but I couldn't help thinking at the time that the repetitive melody that any second year piano student can perform, is likely in heavy rotation on Hell's jukebox.

Not my cup of tea either.

I have Tubular Bells (Theme From The Exorcist)(1) in my music library since June because of a request from another FReeper. ;D

Well, all of us are entitled to our opinions, and I respect both of yours. I have liked Mike Oldfield since hearing Tubular Bells. In fact I have two copies of the vinyl, one for listening and the other for preservation. What I appreciated most about Oldfield’s Tubular Bells was his playing so many of the instruments to make the album. Oldfield made me begin to appreciate progressive rock more than I already had, although some say his music is New Age. And you are correct, Drumbo, about Oldfield’s variations of the Tubular Bells theme.

Yes, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, Frank Zappa, Mother’s of Invention, The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, Alan Parsons, Rush, ELP, Jeff Beck, Jefferson Airplane, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Genesis and other bands of the era had an impact on the progressive rock movement. All these bands and rock stars broadened my horizons and helped me to understand what my ears enjoyed hearing. Even Todd Rundgren, David Bowie and Roxy Music were considered to be progressive rock recording artists, although Roxy Music was more avant garde. I could go on and maybe say something about Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and others, but I won’t bore you. SMILE!!!

Drumbo, I really didn’t expect you to DL all of Tubular Bells III. Perhaps, I didn’t make myself clear about my request. I was just wondering about the version from the youtube. I thank you for your perseverance and dedication for making some of us FReepers a little happier.

EsmeraldaA, I simply can’t thank you enough for what you did for me. You went the extra mile to answer that dreadful challenge I requested of you. I should have had the mods delete the post and posted another for just maybe two songs and be happy. I promise I won’t do that again to you. Next time I’ll just request five songs instead of six. You do know I am only kidding.

What I should actually do is digitally record a few of the songs from my modest album collection (about 3000) and learn html. Then, I could try to be as good a DeeJay as the two of you and the others who take time out of their lives to please the many FReepers who tune into the music dedication thread every weekend.

Once, again, thank you both and all the DeeJays for your diligence and devotion.
