Dingell foe Mulls Michigan Senate Race ( Dr Rob Steele vs. Stabenow !)
Politico ^ | 02/24/2011 | David Cantanese

The lack of a dominate Senate candidate for Michigan Republicans is opening up a window of opportunity for a wild card contender, such as former congressional candidate Rob Steele.

Steele told POLITICO this week he's been approached about the possibility from those "within the party and not in the party" and is actively considering a challenge to Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

“I’m listening to people and I’m speaking with people but I certainly don’t have a firm decision," said the surgeon who ran unsuccessfully against the 28-term Rep. John Dingell, the longest serving sitting member of the House. "People were excited about a race against Dingell. I’m a very non-traditional candidate.”

He also strongly suggested he would not take another shot at the southeastern 15th Congressional District if in includes Ann Arbor after the new maps are drawn.

Michigan will lose one of its 15 seats after the redistricting process and some in the state have speculated that an emboldened GOP legislature could draw lines that radically alter the demographics of Dingell's district.

Because of the heavily Democratic trend in Ann Arbor, Steele argued he would have a better chance running than statewide.

An operative notes he's beloved by the party faithful for giving " the Dean of the House his most competitive general election in living memory."

The roster of the GOP's possibilities is murky and fluid. Rep. Pete Hoekstra appeared to be leaning against a bid after joining a Washington lobbying firm last month. Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has signaled the chances of her running would increase if Hoekstra decides against a bid. National committeeman Saul Anuzis and wealthy businessman Tim Leuliette are also contemplating runs, but would begin with relatively low name recognition having never been elected to office.

May he send Debbie Stabacow into much needed retirement. She is dangerously incompetent.

Steele entered the race against Dingell late and gave him a serious challenge. Of the names floated in the article Steele would get my vote.

Ditto that. Dr. Rob caused the Dingell campaign to run hard, and the discussion is it cost the MI Dem’s 4 house seats and the city of Monroe for example went from 11 to 1 to 10 to 2 Republican ( councilmen) if my memory is correct. The district was so Dem intense ( A-Squared ) it was a hard hill to climb. It was a valiant effort. Dingell lost his chair, is now in the minority so what truly did he win. The last public event I was @ with Stabenow she actually got some boos in Detwaa, I think her support maybe a mile wide and an inch thin.

That's putting it mildly.

Wow! What a “consolation prize” that would be! I was so disappointed when he narrowly lost to Dingell. I'd MUCH rather have him as our senator, though, and send Stabacow out to pasture. Dr. Steele is very impressive.

Doc is very impressive, you should meet him in person, humble, nice guy, listens to you intently and that is just for starters.

I saw him speaking at the diag in Ann Arbor right before the election. He shook our hand. Very humble and sincere patriot.

A Republican candidate running against Dingell should heavily exploit his remarks to WJR AM 760 (Detroit) radio’s Paul W. Smith on March 24, 2010...link-to below >>>

I just came across this, and good news it is.

Saw him at Schoolcraft at the last tea party event of the year in these parts late last fall, he was terrific and really bloodied Dingell and yes, left some political bodies to get buried.

Really like this guy, would support him over the other governor retread candidates that are sure to emerge.

He really strikes a chord with tea party types like me, and him being a Dr. will be great ammo against that fat pig Stabasow and her Obamacare.

Yes I was their, he rocked the house on a beautiful Sat Aftn, people were willing to come in a building and listen to a potential politican rather than enjoy the day.

FWIW, before Xmas I was @ an outside public event in Detwaa, where Stabenow was part of the MC's on stage.

She got boo's in Detwaa....

With that said, I really think she is beatable, and Doc is the consumate outsider, the same energy that swept Snyder in.

Let us hope he considers to give it a go.

Was the sound awful in the S'craft gym or what?  We got to see some other speakers that day too, including my rep. Tim Walberg who got the seat back from crook Schauer.

BTW, do you recall seeing this t-shirt (front & back)  at Schoolcraft?  It was me LOL, and I wear it to all the Rattle With Us tea parties in this area. Come and say HI if you see it LOL.

This thread goes back to February, but is still relevent. Rob Steele would be interesting and perhaps be able to garner free press. With no top tier Republicans interested, why not?
