Head Start is something I haven’t thought of in years. I used to be involved in the weekly 4 hour live uplink that went nationwide. Talk about dull air.
My mother was one of the earliest employees of head start and worked for them for nearly 20 years. It became all about the grant money.
Just one more federal money hole and social programing nursery.
Head Start is supposed to provide great academic support for young disadvantaged students. It doesn’t. The advantages are very short term and the advantages disappear in a couple of years. This is a true liberal feel good program. And it is as effective as most true liberal feel good programs.
And of course White parents pay for the vast majority of the program.
The Welfare state is failing, and with it much of "minority achievement" - a fantasy made up of special programs, welfare, affirmative action and government jobs will dispear with it. Much of the black middle class will disapear with FedGov, thought the NFL and NBA guys will still be making the big bucks.
It's gonna be an interesting decade.

I assure you politics is the reason Head Start was chosen for closure first.
The media wants red meat and the Dems serve it up. Angry mothers without government-supplied baby-sitters will be sicced on Republicans.

One or two months ago, there was a report that the White House requested from the OMB, "grading" Federal Programs from 0 to 100% effectiveness. Anything below 70% can safely be considered questionable; under 40% is a clear "FAIL".
As I recall, Head Start was in the mid 30s.
Unfortunately, the bureaucracy sees to it that any embarrassing data like that is virtually impossble for the ordinary citizen to obtain. I spent a couple of days trying to download the data in the form it was presented on cable news, but failed.

Worth poking around, even if the site forces you to find the data for each of the gazillion Federal Departments separately. And the numerical rating is not given; however, ineffective pretty much covers it.
I laugh when the elected and appointed criminals in the Executive Department ask us with moronic expressions, "where do you want us to cut?

Seems like it's mainly an expensive Day Care program.
So they moved to take over the public schools and younger kids - but dang it, too many of them also either stayed with or reverted to their upbringing.
So, they got the movement going to get women out to work - and then provide headstart to help for ‘babysitting.’

DIRECT QUOTE from one of their conference manuals: “We must get to them [children] starting by age 2 BEFORE THEIR PARENTS HAVE INSTILLED THEIR VALUES IN THEM.”
As far as the mantra that Headstart gave kids a better start in school, studies showed that by 3rd-4th grade, kids were so burned out of being in school that they lost ground.
Children need their first few years at home to have time to get a good sense of themselves as an individual, not just one of a group.
And we know how the commies feel about individualism.
The good news is, there will be a sudden surplus of short buses for unemployed and illegal immigrant families to live in.

There’s been enough studies to show that Head Start is useless, as the kids drop to average within maybe two years of getting out.
It would be something entirely different if they actually made an effort to teach the kids reading as I did for my kids when they were that age (psst...PHONICS!!!!), but that is not politically correct - so they never actually learn to read, and thus are unable to take off on their own and stay ahead.
It’s just another waste of government money, added to our debt.

Its about time. This has really just been a jobs scheme. If it had any merit, students would be achieving a lot more in their later school years.
Delightful! This program is a sham and a waste. the ONLY thing useful it does is that it gives a reasonably safe space to the kids there whose parents happen to be abusive/neglectful.
In which case, if the kids are in danger, they need more than four safe hours a day.
Head starts are closing down because they are funded through social services and the left wants to create a public preschool/ day care starting at age 3 or 4, which would be part of the public school system. The reasons are myriad.
1. equalize benefits of preschool between middle class and poor minorities -all get same experience.
2. transfer cost from social services to education.
3. start 12 years of education at 3 and end it at 15. (The Obama administration wants to make the last two years of high school optional)
4. get control of all children at an early age and indoctrinate them into the liberal mind set while they are still vulnerable.
1) Mainstream Mexican anchor babies.
2) Provide some balanced nutrition to these anchor babies.
3) Acts as a gateway for their unregulated parents to enter into California's, social, safety networks.
4) Provides employment for the anchor babies of the 60's and 70's.
