Labor secretary: GOP governors asking workers to give up their rights By Michael O'Brien - 02/26/11 10:36 AM ET

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is trying to force workers in his state to give up their rights, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said Saturday.

Solis, speaking at the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) Winter Meeting, accosted Walker and Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) for their efforts to reform collective bargaining rights for public workers in their states.

"We know that many states are facing tough budget decisions. We know there's room for shared sacrifice," Solis said. "But the governors in Wisconsin and Ohio aren't just asking workers to tighten their belts, they're asking them to give up their uniquely American rights as workers."

Members of the Obama administration have been careful about weighing in on the labor dispute in Wisconsin, which entered its 12th day on Saturday. President Obama has called Walker's proposals an "assault on unions," but has said little else about it.

As Labor secretary, Solis is somewhat of a point person for the administration on the issue. She met on Thursday with Vice President Biden and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, along with the presidents of AFL-CIO organizations. Her remarks on the dispute before a DNC meeting also reflect the close political relationship between the official Democratic Party and organized labor.

"All they're really asking for is the opportunity to sit down at the table, like grown-ups, and to work together to solve problems," she said of protesters in Madison. "And that's what collective bargaining is all about."

Wait, I thought the adminstration wasn't going to inject itself into a state fight.

You know, like they did from the very beginning.

But not any more.

Unless they do.

they're asking them to give up their uniquely American rights as workers.

Yeah, they're unique alright. Got the taxpayer by the throat. Since when is one sided bargaining a 'right'..?

Fine. Then fire the 14 RAT Senators who fled to Illinois and pick 14 protestors to replace them and sit down at the table.

"...they're asking them to give up their uniquely American rights as workers."

If only there was such zeal to enforce actual Rights enumerated in the Constitution, such as:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

What about the rights of the taxpayers that are paying the wages of these bloated unions? I suppose that the commies in Washington don’t give a fat rat’s backside about them.

Under Gov. Walkers plan WI state workers can still collectively bargain for pay and working conditions — just not pensions which endebt the state for 30+ years and are not economically viable for the taxpayer. The Labor Secretary is either grossly uninformed or a typical parasite socialist. Or perhaps both.

How does that old adage go ? "Your rights end where my nose begins." I'd say my wallet is well within the sphere of rights my nose maintains. Get your hands out of my pocket, labor secretary.

Unlike the Democrats who are asking the voters to give up their rights.

They have every "right" to ask for outlandish benefits and pay, the state reserves the right to say "no".

These people actually believe they should get everything they ask for...unbelievable.

No, asking the GOVERNMENT workers to give up some of their spoiled brat benefits! THey are not a right! What a bunch of BS and I am tired of being ripped off by theses demon possessed spoiled brats. And what’s more, let’s do away with the income tax while we are at it and the home and car tax! It is criminal to have to pay part of our salary to government and pay the government to own a home or they will confiscate it and sell it! How dare they! I am ready for whatever it takes to regain our prosperity and freedom and put evil back in it’s place. And those idiot dupes on the left can get a regular job and quite bitching! THank you!

>> Title: Labor secretary: GOP governors asking workers to give up their rights

Hardly a mention of the word “union”.

As a non-union, working US Citizen, I’d like to know what special rights are granted to the union folks that are not granted to the rest of the citizens?

All they're really asking for is the opportunity to sit down at the table, like grown-ups, and to work together to solve problems,

From their behavior over the past week they have demonstrated that they lack the capability of acting like grown ups. When my girls were two they knew better than this bunch.
