Obama declares national state of emergency over Libya
Foreign Policy ^ | 2/25/2011 | Josh Rogin

President Obama issued an executive order Friday evening that imposes immediate sanctions on Libyan ruler Muammar al Qaddafi, his sons and his accomplices in the slaughter of civilians. In a letter accompanying the order, Obama declared a national emergency over the situation.

"I have determined that the actions of Colonel Muammar Qaddafi, his government, and close associates, including extreme measures against the people of Libya, constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. The order declares a national emergency to deal with this threat," Obama wrote in the letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

The executive order itself condemns the "wanton violence against unarmed associates" perpetrated by Qaddafi, his sons, his government, and his close associates. Effective immediately, all U.S.-based assets of Qaddafi and his four sons are to be frozen and transactions intended to move those assets are prohibited. The order allows the measures to be expanded to include any member of the Libyan government who are determined to be complicit in Qaddafi's brutality.

In a personal statement issued by the White House at the same time as the order, Obama referenced what he called the Libyan government's continued violation of human rights, brutalization of its people, and outrageous threats.

"By any measure, Muammar el-Qaddafi's government has violated international norms and common decency and must be held accountable," the statement read. "We will stand steadfastly with the Libyan people in their demand for universal rights, and a government that is responsive to their aspirations. Their human dignity cannot be denied."

I pray every day that God would strike down Obama and his evil minions and replace them with Godly men and women.

Then I stand corrected. I was recalling what my Dad told me a while back. Maybe he said license plate. I only remember long lines and no gas signs. I didn’t understand what was going on then. I was too young.

“He declared a National Emergency without a public announcement? The only reason I can see for this to be happening is not so much any more about Libya...Libya is pretty much a done deal except for the final killing. This has to do more with Saudi Arabia and their approaching “Day of Rage” on 3/11. SA is already mobilizing troops within their own country. SA falls and we will have a National Emergency on our hands here, gas lines, and ration cards.

And just remember we wouldn’t be in this position if the Democrats had let us develop our own resources over the past 50 years.”

Now that really has me thinking I know a lot of people say they are safe from all this but I doubt anyone would have ever thought they would over throw Egypt from what started as a Facebook protest either. This would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back but then again economically speaking there are a lot of straws that can finish taking us down.

Got all that. Does sanctions against a foreign nation necessitate declaring a state of emergency? It is within the normal prerogative of the president to withold corrency in a US bank if there is believed to be fraud or other abuse of authority, privilege or use. Seizure is not a national emergency.
I applaud the act of seizing and/or freezing illegally gained Libyan resources. As with most of the Obama administration they use a gun when a knife is called for. An IEPPA allows much more than his stated intent. Or am I simply paranoid?

It was last digit of the license plate, I had cars and trucks registed in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi, none of which had a inspection law.

I believe he declared a National Emergency with the bird-flu scare 16 months ago that has never been rescinded.

I’m sure Mommar in his state of pre psychotic breakdown is real worried about Barry’s sanctions. Is he kidding?

Obama also renewed the National State of Emergency late last year for the September 11th attacks in 2000. It looks like Obama used "Lybia" to push the expiration date further into the future. The 'National Emergency Act' sets a 2 year time limit to prevent presidents from keeping the nation in a perpetual emergency state.

You'll know something is up if Obama suspends habeas corpus under Article 1, Section 9 of the US Constitution.

I find nothing wrong with allowing the Admin know that we are aware of the possibilities. At the very least, keeping ourselves edu to the pitfalls of this loophole re our freedoms.
Even with all of the NE Declarations since 9-11, we STILL see so-called “homegrown” terrorists. The last being the most dangerous so far and it wasn’t even one of the long drawn out investigations. It was citizens that caught him.
