Clearing of Capitol may lead to peaceful arrests
Journal Sentinel ^ | Feb. 27, 2011 | Bill Glauber, Patrick Marley and Amy Hetzner

The Wisconsin AFL-CIO released a statement Sunday that said "hundreds might risk peaceful arrest" as police prepare to shutdown the Capitol by 4 p.m.

The Capitol has been the site of mass demonstrations, with many people spending the night inside the rotunda. The Capitol was due to close Sunday afternoon and open for regular business Monday.

The statement quoted Wisconsin Professional Police Association Executive Director Jim Palmer, who said:

"Law enforcement working at the Capitol has been impressed with how peaceful and courteous everyone has been. As has been reported in the media, the protesters are cleaning up after themselves and have not caused any problems. The fact of that matter is that Wisconsin's law enforcement community opposes Governor Walker's effort to eliminate collective bargaining in this state, and we implore him to not do anything to increase the risk to officers or the public. Security cannot come at the cost of conflict."

Meanwhile, on NBC's "Meet the Press," Gov. Scott Walker said Sunday that the quick passage of local union contracts around in the state in recent weeks shows public workers aren't committed to paying more for their retirement and health care.

"We've seen union local after union local … rush through contracts that had no pension contributions," Walker said.

Walker is seeking to have most state, local and school employees to pay half their pension costs - 5.8% of pay for state workers - and at least 12% of their health care costs. The plan is part of a sweeping budget-repair bill that also takes away most collective bargaining rights for all public workers except police, firefighters and state troopers.

Do as anyone believe there will be peaceful arrests. some of the SOB will go kicking and screaming in full view of the media. 2 hours and 8 minutes to go till the wisconsin Sate Capitol is to be closed, the truth will come out. The media will be there to show how the police are abusive. Funny they are public union employees too. no different than many of the media, union employees too. Little do they know that they will be next when their employers decide to make cuts, the media will scream it is unfair.

Cops had better be in riot gear. All it takes is a couple of these demented wackos to do something dumb and then there is a riot. If they do riot, drop all pretenses of being nice and drop a few of them.

I’d say the likelyhood of peaceful resistance is pretty good.

In the 60s and early 70s, being busted at a protest was a badge of honor to those who participated.

Yeah, they’re a nice, clean, respectful bunch.

Looks like they could use a bit of personal cleaning also.

The protesters had “classes” last night on how to be carried out peacefully. Also are reporting the cops are on their side.

WTH is the matter with you Palmer? Did you and Odumbo have a meeting this week and decide how you’re going to obstruct JUSTICE and flaunt the laws of the United States? This is one of the dumbest, most idiotic statements I ever heard come from a Law Enforcement Officer and that includes Arizona’s Dumbnik!

If you’re not willing to uphold the laws of Wisconsin, you need to be fired or resign. What has made Dumbocrats and Union members think they ARE the law all of a sudden??? There must be some kind of virus going around that is driving Libtards over the edge of sanity!

Who is going to “protect and serve” if you and yours can’t provide “security at the cost of conflict?.” Next, you’ll be choosing not to respond to calls for police that are made by Republicans because it “conflicts” with your duty to your Socialist ideals. I guess you took your cue from the chickensh@t Dems that ran away rather than do their job and uphold due process.

I think the whole lot of you belong in jail, or at the very least, a mental institution. You’ve become a danger to the stability and rule of law in the United States and are clearly in favor of mob rule. Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame!

..because never in the history of law enforcement has a police officer said, "I'm sure it's all just a misunderstanding sir. Now if you'll just come down to the station with me, we can get it all cleared up."

The demonstrators are about to get owned.

I'd guess a few of the "professional agitators" will put on a show while everybody else will go home. Can't have those teachers losing pay making court appearances now, can we?

Rule of Law? With this administration? What a joke. Odumbo telling his AG which laws to enforce; ignoring federal judiciary rulings that Odumbo Death Care if unconstitutional; ignoring contract law for the benefit of unions and detriment of investors. There are many, many grounds for impeachment of O.

Unfortunately, his refusal to enforce laws is trickling rapidly down to State and City levels.

I'm watching a live feed from the Capitol. Doors were locked at 2:00 but they are letting one in for two coming out. At 4:00 they are reporting they have to leave. Crowd outside is asking for those willing to be arrested to go in. http://www.ustream.tv/channel-popup/afl-cio-2010-rally
