Mathematically, they NEED to cut spending.
I would argue that in accordance with the Constitutional concept of limited government, they NEED to cut spending.
If the poll shows 58% of the people want spending cuts, then in the name of their electoral future, they NEED to cut spending.

What does it say about the Republicans that they are faced with a $1.6T deficit, and they can only muster a $104B cut???

It says that there are only three months left in this fiscal year to make cuts and that the majority of the current budget has already been spent. I expect the first full FY budget to contain the needed cuts, and so should every conservative.
