Illinois Lawmakers Debate Concealed Carry Gun Law (Will be Introduced March 8th)

Springfield, Ill. - Illinois lawmakers are taking aim at some new legislation that would make it legal for gun owners to carry concealed weapons.

House Bill 148, named the Family and Personal Protection Act, is seen as giving gun rights advocates their best chance at getting the legislation passed.

Already 48 other states have some form of this law and proponents say HB 148 levels the playing field between criminals and law abiding citizens in Illinois.

"Criminals don't follow the law and law abiding citizens who follow the law should be able to protect themselves, their property and their family so it's a question right now of the fact that a lot of citizens are disarmed and really sitting ducks for criminals," said Attorney Walter Maksym, who has represented numerous plaintiffs, including the man challenging Chicago's handgun regulation.

But opponents of the bill say it's just bad public policy.

"We think it's a bad idea, the number one concern we have is what you're talking about it putting more guns out on the street and not knowing who has those. And what that's gonna lead to is a reaction of people who want to be the first one to pull their gun out," said Mark Walsh, Campaign Director for the Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence."

Neither side is willing to predict how the vote will turn out. The bill is expected to be introduced March 8th.

Gotta have pre-emption, so that state law overides local law. Otherwise, someone who has jumped through all the hoops to get a CCW permit will be subjected to harrassmenr and possible arrest if he/she goes into a different town/county. I am a resident of Illinois and know that this would happen.

Now I know why Richie was trying to rope Imanuel into more gun control legislation today. He wondered why the people aren’t outraged that street thugs continue to kill people and have throughout his draconian gun control for the City.

Richie, you dumbass, the street thugs aren’t going to pay any attention to your laws, that is what they do.

Jeff Winston, the following is not attacking you, just my vent against the dumbass remarks made by Mark Walsh

Mark Walsh partial quote
“We think it’s a bad idea, the number one concern we have is what you’re talking about it putting more guns out on the street and not knowing who has those.”

Mark, at this time we know who has guns on the street, albeit not by name. The thugs and gangbangers.

If CCW is passed, you will have a partial data base of people carrying guns.

That is legal citizens who will need to go thru intensive background checks and need to fill out paper work that the average punk gang banger criminal probably could not read or comprehend.

Also Mark I am fairly certain that your goal has nothing to do with preventing gun violence, but has everything to do with depriving Americans of the right to be secure in their person and property.

Is there an Illinois ping list?

We can donate to this cause. I know Walter Maksym. He represented a young black man accused of illegal firearms transportation. He won that case.

That was back when John Birch of ConcealCarry.org still lived in Illinois.

FReepers committed to seeing a freer Illinois can donate here:

There's also a preemption bill in the works. See Illinoiscarry.com Quick Reference List: Gun Bills in 2011/2012 session.

We don’t need that law. Because of the 2nd Amendment, we already know that law-abiding Americans have the right to carry guns, to defend themselves.

I’m the chairman of the Illinois Center Right Coalition, a conservative, statewide group that was founded in 2003. The steering committee has included about 40 people, including John Cox, Pat O’Malley, Mike Psak, Norm Hill, John McNeal, Scott Bludorn, Gary Dunlap, Ray True, Jeff Sykuta, Craig Simmons, and Liz Eilers. Our site is www.illinoiscenterright.com.

The ICRC will hold a meeting on March 5, noon-2:00, at the Old Country Buffet, at 551 E. Roosevelt Rd., Lombard. We’ll discuss the results of the Feb. elections and whom we should endorse, in the April elections. Will you attend? I reserved a room for free because each attendee is expected to buy lunch, which costs $9.99 + tip.
