The costs to U.S. states of the Medicaid insurance program for the poor will grow by hundreds of billions of dollars under the healthcare law passed last year, according to a report released by Republicans in the Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday.

"This law, because of Medicaid expansions, has put a strain on state budgets," Senator Orrin Hatch, one of the report's sponsors, told a meeting of hospital administrators on Tuesday. "Medicaid expansions threaten to bankrupt the states."

If tax money is going to saved in Medicaid - Medicare, outside audits are a prerequisite to undercover the billions being stolen each year at the Federal, State and local agency levels. Unless rigorous audits are done nothing will change in terms of fraud and theft of tax payer funds — by government officials.

Just heard Sam Zell on CNBC this morning.

He relayed the following story:

The topic (in advance of today’s phony unemployment numbers) was how to get companies to hire workers. Lots of back & forth. But here is the kicker: Zell mentions that while Obamacare was about to come up for the final, miserable vote he went to Capitol Hill to “lobby” a couple of lawmakers. Reminding them that this kind of bill with so much uncertainty built into it, was guaranteed to put a chill on employment.

Here is the exchange he relayed to the host.

Zell to lawmaker: This bill gives only 6 years of services, based on 10 years of revenue. What happens in Year 11 ????

Lawmaker: I’m 80 years old.

Let that roll around in your brain for a while.

We’re doomed, if this is the mentality up there.

Amid Cuomo’s Medicaid Cuts, Health Care Workers’ Union Shapes a Victory
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/26/nyregion/26medicaid.html

Intertwined with the hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts proposed on Thursday by Mr. Cuomo’s Medicaid task force were an array of policies and spending decisions avidly sought by the union, 1199 S.E.I.U. United Healthcare Workers East. They included a wage floor for home health workers; substantial rollbacks in Mr. Cuomo’s proposed cuts to nursing homes and personal care; and a major overhaul of the home care industry that is likely to boost the union’s membership over the long term.
