WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - "He ran over my son. He hit him and then he said he felt the impact and he ran over my son. He didn't even stop,” cried Tricia Perez just after the man accused in the hit and run accident that claimed her son’s life stood before a judge.
Sergio Herrera Pena pleaded guilty to driving without a license and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Investigators say he was in the U.S. illegally when he hit, then ran over 28-year-old Iraq War veteran Joseph Williams on Boynton Beach Road. in February of 2010.
Perez said, "He didn’t even come back to check on him or anything. He didn't even call 911.”
Pena’s attorney, Michael Silver explained, “Police drove about a block and he was waiting right there for them. It wasn't willful leaving the scene of an accident, the issue was that Mr. Herrera Pena did not have a license."
Pena will have to wait until Thursday to learn his sentence for taking the life of a hero who served in both Kosovo and Iraq.
“ 'Mom, I signed up to protect my country.’ That's exactly what he told me," Perez recalled.
But, it’s something else he told her that will stick in his mother’s mind forever. He promised he would be safe driving his motorcycle in the last conversation they ever had.
“I said, ‘Honey, it's not you, it's the other person I'm worried about.’ That's the last thing I told him. It's the other person and look what the other person did to my baby," his mother said.
Pena could face a maximum of 35 years behind bars.
His attorney said he will be deported to Mexico after he serves his sentence.
Is there anyone who doesn’t know this puke is an illegal?
Were it not for that begrudging last quote about deportation from his lawyer, the average reader would not have known. As far as I’m concerned, the news should have emphasized his border jumping rather than just mentioning it in passing.

If they had been honest about the problems associated with illegal immigration, if they'd bother to inform the public, Americans would have pressured their representatives to clean up the border years ago.
