Electorate wants more cuts than the GOP is willing to make.
If theres one thing politicians are good it, its avoiding hard choices. The new Republican majority in the House appears - at least for the moment - not to be an exception. Despite having a clear mandate to make deep cuts in the current budget, the House proposed a mere $4 billion in pain-free reductions while putting off the question of a government shutdown for another two weeks. The timid approach met with overwhelming 91-9 approval in the Senate yesterday and a 335-91 vote in the House on Tuesday.
President Obama will have no problem signing this continuing resolution (CR) into law because it keeps the government open until March 18 while zeroing out programs the White House already had targeted for elimination. Coming up with $4 billion in savings every two weeks would add up to the $100 billion Republicans pledged to cut, but the public expects more.
A Rasmussen Reports poll released Tuesday suggested 53 percent of likely voters believe the GOP plan to be insufficient. Another 58 percent have no problem with a shutdown of the non-essential functions of government to get the job done right.
Nobody is going to lose sleep over the loss of $2.7 billion in earmarked pork projects made in the current CR. Of the $1.2 billion in programs closed, $680 million comes in the form of one-time hits that provide no long-term budget savings. For instance, the Smithsonian Institution will not receive $30 million to renovate a building - funds that werent needed because the money was already raised from private donors. Another $650 million in transportation spending that was never part of the presidents budget will also be dropped...

By not demanding to see the rookie Hussein’s birth certificate? I agree.
Cut cut cut then cut more. Across the board. 15 to 20% on everything including entitlements.
Republicans are Republicans... Last time the Repubs had control of the House, they squandered many many opportunities. Then it was lead by the RINO brigade of McCain and Co. and his gang. Rolling over on judicial nominees, and failing to take decisive action on immigration (not AMNESTY!), and so many other failed opportunities.
And here we go again... and already failing.
I agree. The house has nothing to lose passing massive cuts. Everyone knows the Senate and WH ain’t going to pass it, but do it anyway. Too much trying to cooperate on agreed cuts between all parties.
One party - two factions.
I don’t know what to say about republican control. In 1992 - 2000 they could have done good by leaving Clinton alone and cutting the government. Now, they have to do what we want or...??? vote for Obama again?
I am more focused on the end results, not the entire process.
It's not a revenue issue, it's the SPENDING!
Have you ever heard of the TEA Party? Taxed Enough Already! You want to eliminate the mortgage deduction when the housing market is in the toilet? Now there's a smart dumb move.
They say that like it's a bad thing. Frankly, I really don't have much sympathy for people who don't plan for retirement. While there are some who find themselves in dire straights through no fault of their own (e.g., an accident and catastrophic medical bills), most people simply didn't plan for their retirement very well. So, while I denied myself 15% of current consumption for almost 45 years so I could retire comfortably, others just "lived for today". That's their choice...but I shouldn't have to pay for it.
How 'bout some ketchup with that cat food?
Take a chill pill. This is ONLY a two week continuing resolution. The Republican House is going to cut much, much more.
I am just saying that there are ways that EVERYONE will feel the pain. If we are going to sacrifice for the country through cuts than everyone should feel them. Right now only the military is feeling the cuts. How convenient that 1 percent of the United States get screwed.
I got a feeling the ongoing drama in Wisconsin is doing far more damage to us. The longer this runs on the more mobilized the union thugs will become and thus the harder they will be able to strike, the more people they will radicalized. The more useful idiots we will have to deal with.
IF ever there was a time where the need to demand separation it comes to mind today. Those that want to support the unions should share a country with theses abusive organizations blackmailing their government to tax every penny from them.
Let them who think others have a right to extort their employer live with them criminal extorters.
Cat food with catsup? Nobody puts catsup on cat food
Walker should have stuck to budget cuts. He made a tactical error. Going for the jugular has predictable results. There was no need to go after anything other than cuts. If as you say the unions are now emboldened, and I agree with you they are, Walker was the catylist.
I thought I saw Victor Jory do that in a movie...
