Senate Dems Answer House GOP on Spending Cuts, Reid Predicts Bills Will Fail
Fox News ^ | 3/4/2011 | Trish Turner

In the face of Republican calls for Democrats to offer a plan of their own for funding the federal government, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid unveiled a $1.1 trillion bill which imposes $6.5 billion in new spending cuts -- and then promptly declared both it and the rival House GOP proposal dead on arrival.

"Not to spoil the surprise, but we all know how it will turn out. We know neither will reach the president's desk as read," Reid predicted Friday, as he set the Senate up for a Tuesday vote on the House-passed bill to fund the government for the remaining seven months of the federal fiscal year.

"We'll end up back at square one without consensus, without a budget for the rest of this fiscal year, and without assurances that we can keep the country running," Reid said. "So, once these votes are behind us, and everyone's voice is heard, I hope each senator and member of Congress will find renewed motivation to do what we needed to do since the beginning, come together, negotiate in good faith."

As he also sought a vote on the new Democratic alternative, Reid repeatedly called the House GOP legislation "mean-spirited" and "political," describing the legislative process there as "a mad rush to see who could do the most sensational amendment." The GOP proposal, which passed the House, would have cut $61 billion from 2010 spending levels, while the Democrats' plan calls for $6.5 billion in new cuts, in addition to a $4 billion reduction agreed to in a bipartisan stopgap bill signed Wednesday by the president.

So, the Democrats want to shut down the government.
I doubt I’ll notice, but I’m sure the parasite class (aka, the Democrat party “base”) will jump up and down and holler.

In a different time men like this would be swinging from a gallows after a swift trial by a jury of tax payers.

without assurances that we can keep the country running Oh the horror! Shut it down, start over. Pick names out of the phone book to replace all of them.

Not to spoil the surprise, Mr. Reid, but you are as predictable and professional as a toad.

“and without assurances that we can keep the country running”

The federal government is NOT the country. The government may stop running, but the country would not. It is a shame that Reid easily gets away with this nonsense. Nobody challenges him. Perhaps if the government did shut down, the country could avoid collapse. The government is not the country.

Hey clown, you and your party refused to debate a budget before the elections as was your duty. You then jammed through disgusting legislation in a lame duck session. If government shuts down, the people will hold you, and not the GOP accountable.

The old buzzard wouldn’t be able to say this kind of crap if the state run “media” wasn’t full of commie libs and run by the DNC.

Democrats are so full of themselves - thinking the Federal Government runs the "country." The federal government does not run America. The free citizens of America, their industriousness and hard work is what makes the nation functional and viable. If the federal government shuts down it won't be missed.

It only took 60 days for the Democrats to delude themselves in to thinking the wipe out last year never occurred. Now it will be 2 more years of this crap.

With many Dems up for reelection, I would think they would want to ignore Reid and deal. Then again, I sense Reid has more control on his rats than McConnell.

it's apparent Reid thinks he has the momentum and and upper hand.

Shut it down.

The House should pass ONE and only ONE Bill to fund operations and increase the debt through the remainder of the year. They should match and they should cut 20% of the deficit (part of a 5 year plan to solvency).

Upon passage they should announce they'll take no further votes on the matter...and then stick to it.

Short of such action they neither deserve to hold office or carry the GOP banner.

The old buzzard wouldn’t be able to say it if a half-way credible candidate had run against him. Opportunity lost.

Reid repeatedly called the House GOP legislation "mean-spirited"

"mean spirited". Can't these pecker heads think of some new pejoratives? I've heard more originality on the school yard playground.
