The vote taken by the members of St. Martin's Lutheran Church, January 31, 2011 to withdraw from the ELCA lost by only 3 votes, 251-129. Clearly, a strong majority had the desire to sever ties with the ELCA. Now, the congregation is experiencing a world of hurt. While 10% of St. Martin's members recently petitioned the Church Council for a new vote, their pastor, Gerald Miller, who served St. Martin's for 17 years, has resigned effective March 1, 2011. A new congregation, aligned with the North American Lutheran Church and led by Pastor Miller, is being developed--Annapolis Evangelical Lutheran Church. It will hold its first service this coming Sunday. Prior to the vote, St. Martin's had a baptized membership of over 1000.
Similar stories continue to unfold across the ELCA, especially in churches where the measure to leave was lost by only a few votes. If only those voting to remain could see the end from the beginning and understand the consequences should they "win" the right to stay in the ELCA, they might want to change their vote. Many members voting to leave the ELCA are not voting for a preference which they can take or leave. These folks cannot in good conscience remain attached to a church body that denies and tramples the Word of God. It is sad to see these congregations come apart at the seams after a close vote, but praise God that so many are willing to stand for the Word of God regardless of the cost.
Since the ELCA voted to accept practicing homosexuals onto their clergy roster in 2009, approximately 145 new congregations have been started by laity and pastors withdrawing from the ELCA. The congregations that have voted to withdraw from the ELCA since August 2009 represent a net loss to the ELCA of over 266,000 members. Add to this number those who are now attending the 145 new congregations mentioned above, and add also the thousands more who just walked out of the ELCA in absolute disgust over their departures from biblical truth.
Please remember to pray for all the ELCA congregations and members facing the process of voting to leave. And pray too for these new congregations being formed.
We praise God for Pastor Gerald Miller, a true servant of Christ who refuses to compromise the Word of God. May many more such stand-up leaders arise.
ELCA will lose a couple hundred members in Annapolis because of this "victory." For all their legalistic obstacles to keep churches from leaving, they can't stop people from just walking out the door...

First vote failed last Sunday 88 - 87. Pastor is resgning Tuesday night and starting a NALC mission on Ash Wednesday.,
Indeed, I will be praying for my faithful Lutheran Brothers and Sisters who chose rather to stand on the Word of God, pay the price and suffer the pain of separation, than to remain in fellowship with compromise. Blessings to all — may the Father give them peace and through them win many to the Kingdom!

I knew Pastor Barnhart back in the late 1970’s and early 80’s when he waged a war against Lutheran Social Services (LSS) in Minneapolis. LSS was counseling children to masturbate, use pornography and sponsored nude swimming events and other delightful Christian activities. William Seabloom was the mastermind behind the progressive measures and the Lutheran church was backing LSS to the hilt. In the end, LSS back off, Seabloom went bye-bye and, eventually, Barnhart left Trinity Lutheran where he had served many years. Eventually Trinity joined the ELCA and had a massive split including most of their elders (lifetime members). He is quite a man and good soldier.
Please distinguish when talking bout the ELCA. They are not Lutheran at all.
Local pastors at our ELCA church no longer call for the renunciation of Satan at baptism.
Of the three public renunciations, they only do the last one listed in the LBW.

" The newly formed congregation of Annapolis Evangelical Lutheran Church (NALC) held their first service today at 9:00 a.m. They were hoping 150 would come, instead 253 showed up! The congregation met and will continue meeting in the gymnasium of the Annapolis Area Christian School located at 716 Bestgate Road in Annapolis, MD. The pastor, Rev. Gerald Miller, also announced Lenten services will be held on Wednesday evenings during Lent in the school's library. The members of the new congregation, along with Pastor Miller, left St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Annapolis, after that congregation's vote to leave the ELCA failed by three votes.
"Living Water Lutheran Church, a newly formed congregation in Centerville, Ohio, comprised of former members of Epiphany Lutheran Church (ELCA),now has over 450 members. Epiphany's second vote to leave the ELCA failed by a few votes. The new congregation, under the leadership of the Rev. Todd Kornahrens, a former pastor at Epiphany Lutheran, has been meeting for worship at Weller Elementary School in Centerville, while they waited for a permanent site on East Franklin Street to be ready. However, the new congregation has outgrown the Franklin Street facility and has recently signed a lease to meet at the Johnathan Wright Elementary School, 40 Florence Drive, Springboro. Pastor Kornahren said:"The goal is to connect people with Christ. We are not going to be the anti-anything church. We're going to be pro--pro-God, pro-family, pro-working for community."
"Meanwhile, on the ALPB Forum Online, the Rev. Richard Johnson wrote: "Here's an interesting story. One of the congregations that has left the ELCA in the Sierra Pacific is Life Lutheran Church, Richmond, CA, one of two Chinese ministries in the synod (the other one left as well). Some years ago they had been given the property of a closed congregation (closed, actually, if I recall correctly, by the present pastor of Herchurch). Now the synod's attorneys are telling them that they must vacate the property and turn it back to the synod. The justification for this is that when the synod deeded the property to the congregation, there was a clause in the deed saying that it would revert to the synod should it ever cease to be used in mission in the furtherance of "this church." Now "this church" clearly is the way the ELCA refers to itself (rather grandiosely, IMO), and in the ELCA constitution it is clear that when they say "this church" it's the ELCA they are talking about. It does not, however--or so I've been told--say this in the deed by which the property was conveyed to the congregation. And so the legal question is an interesting one, since one has to read it against the clear constitutional provision that when a congregation leaves to affiliate with another Lutheran denomination (and they have affiliated with LCMC, as I understand it), they keep the property.

The semantics of “this Church” are very disturbing.
Clearly the ELCA had long regarded itself as separate and distinct from the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church—then on August 19, 2009, it vaunted itself over against the Bride of Christ.
