McCain is wrong on this one.

Gadhafi is as evil as they come, but he isn’t “insane” at all.- at least not from the information we have.

He feels that he can take a hard stand on the opposition and retain power, even if it means dissing Obama.

He may well be right, the Honduran government stood up to Obama’s rant last year and survived. Gadhafi is on the ground in Libya and is in position to judge the strength of his overall position- both domestically and internationally.

Sounds perfectly “sane” to me.

The Libyan situation is different from Egypt. Egypt relied on our couple billion dollars a year of bribes foreign aid. We could plausibly threaten to withdraw it and tank the Egyptian economy*. We have no such leverage over Libya. Similarly Libya has oil which Europe and therefore the whole world oil market relies on, while Egypt had no necessary exports. Gadhafi thinking he could hang onto power while other tyrants haven't this year isn't a sign of insanity.

*It makes you wonder what would happen if China decided to withhold its hundreds of billions of dollars of loans. Would it collapse our government or would we just learn to quickly dance to their tune.
