US Senator John Kerry wants allies to 'crater' airports

THE Obama administration is under renewed pressure to impose a no-fly zone over Libya after a leading US senator disputed the Pentagon's view that it would require a military attack.

Senator John Kerry yesterday said the US should prepare for a no-fly zone, with its allies, to thwart attempts by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to massacre large numbers of civilians.

As the White House retreated from the proposal, the senator said the US should consider "cratering" Libyan airports to disable Colonel Gaddafi's air force.

"The last thing we want to think about is any kind of military intervention, and I don't consider the no-fly zone stepping over that line," Senator Kerry said.

His opinion carries weight as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and an important Democratic ally of President Barack Obama.

He contradicted Defence Secretary Robert Gates, who condemned "loose talk" about a no-fly zone last week, saying it amounted to military intervention. "A no-fly zone begins with an attack on Libya to destroy the air defences," Dr Gates told a congressional committee hearing.

Speaking on CBS, Senator Kerry said: "That's actually not the only option for what one could do. One could crater the airports and the runways and leave them incapable of using them for a period of time."

The senator, a Vietnam War veteran and Democratic presidential nominee in 2004, was backed by senior Republican colleague John McCain.

Helicopters do not need much of a runway to take off or land.

When you think how close this certifiable moron came to the Oval Office it’s damned scary.

"Well, the bloody fool said he was willing to give peace a chance, as long as he could crater a few runways once in awhile. So, I said sure...and then he threw his medals over the fence."

"The last thing we want to think about is any kind of military intervention, and I don't consider the no-fly zone stepping over that line," Senator Kerry said.

Idiot. You don't implement a no-fly zone with old 737s from US Air, it is done with military aircraft flying in their airspace. You know what? They're probably not going to like that. They'd no-doubt use air defense assets to try to shoot down our patrol aircraft. Maybe they'd send their fighters up to try to either shoot our aircraft down or chase them off.

The point is, a no-fly zone is going to mean military forces shooting ordnance at each other. I don't know about where Mr. Kerry comes from, but when military forces start exchanging fire...where I come from that's "military intervention" and even "war."

His simplistic idea of cratering runways won't necessarily work either. You'd have to crater the taxiways. In the case of Mitiga, you'd probably have to crater that long straight highway that's less than a mile from the airport too. (usable as an alternative?) That'd make us real popular with the Libyans...

There is no reason, Senator Kerry, that aging senators need to be going into the airports of Libyans in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the – of – the historical customs, religious customs. Whether you like it or not ... Libyans should be doing that.

Source quote, in case you don't get the sarcasm:

John F'n Kerry: "US Soldiers terrorize kids"

He’s an idiot and ought be completely ignored.

No, no... I think he's onto something. I think there should be a solo flight into Libyan airspace. And to paraphrase General Shelton; just as soon as Kerry gets his flight qualification, he can fly as low and slow as he wants.

traitorous embarrassment skerry should threaten to throw his well-deserved 4 Purple Hearts onto their runways. By the way, he got them from his “service” in Viet Nam.

Kerry certainly has turned his back on his Peace-Nik Winter Warrior days and become a reborn war-monger, hasn't he?
If he gets a paper cut will he claim another Purple Heart?

Bombing airport runways is one thing, but what if Jen-Jiss Khan is there?

PS - Did you know Kerry was in Vietnam?

"They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country."

Amazing all these leftist doves growing fangs all of a sudden. LOL

Like Gates said. To establish a no fly zone you need to start with air superiority. That means shooting down opposing planes. AKA a shooting war.
